Yes I remember this and the incessant wailing from the left. People don't want to vote for a party that promise to make cuts to wasteful spending (that Tory government being the obvious exception), they vote for those who promise to spend yet more money that far outweighs the tax income. Reform also seem to be falling into this trap as it is the only way to gain power. It's quite frankly a fundamental problem with a democratic system where people vote for what they can get for themselves rather than what is beneficial for the wider country as a whole and/or the future generations. Maybe it's time to embrace a cold and calculating AI to run the country that cannot be swayed by the whingeing and that does not pander to those who contribute the least, and cannot be bribed by lobbyists or self interested parties. That's not a serious point, but the way the UK has been run for the last few decades is clearly unsustainable and I have no doubt an IMF bailout is on the cards before too long along that comes with crippling and forced cuts to every single welfare system. -

Cambodian Navy Expels Thai Tanker in Growing Fuel Trade Row
Tensions flared in Cambodian waters on Friday as the Royal Cambodian Navy expelled a Thai oil tanker caught entering national territory without permission, signalling Phnom Penh’s hardened stance on fuel imports from Thailand. The vessel, Chetthanabodi 6, was intercepted off the coast of Preah Sihanouk province after allegedly breaching Cambodia’s maritime zone. Officials confirmed the ship was swiftly ordered out, in line with recently tightened enforcement measures. “This is a matter of sovereignty and national law,” a navy spokesperson said, adding that all forms of unauthorised fuel transport—including oil and even agricultural products like fruit and vegetables—will be blocked at sea. The incident comes just days after Cambodia formally banned all fuel and gas imports from Thailand. The directive, announced on 22 June, is part of a wider push by the Hun Manet government to diversify Cambodia’s energy supply and reduce dependence on its neighbour. Speaking on Friday, Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak reiterated the government’s stance: “There will be no exceptions. Since the directive took effect, no imports from Thailand are allowed—by land or sea.” Prime Minister Hun Manet has assured the public that Cambodian fuel suppliers can fully meet domestic energy demands through alternative sources. “We have the capacity to handle this shift,” he said earlier in the week. The reasons behind the sudden embargo remain unclear, though analysts suggest the move may reflect broader political or trade tensions between the two countries. Recent border disputes and disputes over trafficking crackdowns have strained relations. While Friday’s naval action was swift and without incident, it marks a sharp escalation in enforcement—and a warning that Cambodia is willing to use force to defend its policies at sea. I lived near NYC for 30 years, went there a lot, and worked there, and spent a lot of time during the nights, and never saw any crime although of course it happened, like it does here a street away from where many live but never see. The same wisdom goes for visiting anywhere. Visit in groups, stay in crowded areas, don't get drunk and out of self control, don't start trouble, stay in lit areas and don't trust anyone. -

We dropped anchor at Pattaya 1980, china white found it's way onboard. Was mostly snorted and smoked mixed with thai stick. We had a few hard core sailors who were needle veterans from before. Now this was pure heroin and not mixed with dangerous additives. You're not immediately addicted with heroin but certainly requires self discipline to stop.
