The Fakeys': Comedians turn tables on Trump's 'fake news' awards

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Samantha Bee is campaigning for "Shrillest Reporting," late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert put up a billboard in New York's Times Square in a bid to win votes, and rival Jimmy Kimmel calls them "The Stupid People's Choice Awards."

 

Far from silencing these critics, U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that he would hand out awards for what he calls "fake news" has fired up comics and media commentators - and has them competing for a "prize."

 

Trump, who has frequently criticized the press, calling them "the enemy of the people," often uses the term "fake news" to cast doubt on reports critical of him or his administration, many times without presenting evidence to support his case.

 

Trump on Jan. 2 tweeted that he planned to announce "THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR" six days later.

 

He then postponed the event until Jan. 17, saying on Twitter, "The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!"

 

A day ahead, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, responding on Tuesday to a reporter's question at a news briefing, said on she had no details on what she called a "potential event."

 

Late-night TV hosts, who have mocked Trump since his 2016 election win, swiftly dubbed the awards "The Fakeys" or "The Trumpies."

 

Colbert, host of "The Late Show" on CBS, is campaigning for "Fakest Dishonesty," "Dishonestest Corruption" and "Smallest Button" among several other made-up categories.

 

In the spirit of Hollywood's movie awards season now underway, "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central took out a spoof full-page "for your consideration" ad in the New York Times, touting the programme's qualifications.

 

In a tongue-in-cheek war of insults, "The Daily Show" has also run videos asking whether Colbert and comic Samantha Bee of "Full Frontal" on TBS "can really be mistrusted," and proclaiming the satirical show's South African-born host, Trevor Noah, "literally un-American."

 

Public radio's predominantly serious "On the Media" show last week ran spoof red-carpet coverage of "The Fakeys," with various newspaper and TV journalists jostling for fake-news honours.

 

Trump's announcement followed nearly a year in which, according to a Washington Post analysis, Trump made some 2,000 false or misleading statements in his first 12 months in office.

 

The term "fake news" was originally coined to describe false reports, often spread through social media and sometimes aimed at supporting or hurting a political figure.

 

Facebook and Twitter have said they have found tens of thousands of posts or accounts linked to Russian-based operatives, many of them spreading misinformation in the months before and after the 2016 election.

Trump is a fountain of fake news, he seems incapable of speaking or even recognizing the truth.  He also uses the childish "Uh-uh, I'm not fake news, you are" when his statements are challenged.  As such, he has been a gift to comedians. 

 

Gotta give him credit, Trump is making political humor great again.

Its funny as sht, but at the same time I have to admit its getting old, we are beating a dead horse. Comedians need to move on to something fresh and just let the old fart rot.

I am surprised that CBS let The Late Show became that political though.

Calling Trumpisms a 'dead horse' is about the nicest way to put it.

Even before Trump became an idiotic politician, he was fodder for TV jokesters.  ....and he will be providing great material for late night ridicule long after he's out of the Oval Office, ....until he dies (and some residual jokes after that).

Trump has announced two deadlines for awarding his ridiculous idea.   Both deadlines passed without a peep from him or his spokespeople.  He's as reliable as a piece of rotten wood as a train brake.

Trump published something today or yesterday re; 'the Fakeys'  It was on a web site which, at first, was non-functional.  Later, he paid someone ($15?) to get a .pdf online.  Earlier, Trump boasted he had many many websites, and paid no more than $3 for each.  Cheapskate Trump gets what he pays for.

 

oh, the .pdf didn't have any awards.  It just had some cut 'n paste of a few news articles which were not lavishing praise on guess-who.

CNN reports when Trump makes a mockery of truth and reality--supporting the Birther movement, accusing Ted Cruz's father of being involved in the Kennedy assassination, claiming that Obama wiretapped him, bragging about the biggest inaugural crowds in history, etc. 

 

That doesn't make CNN fake news, that makes Trump fake news.

What was the point of that post?
I can (via google) translate trump is a s---hole (or house) president in many more languages. (His word that parents all over the world now have to talk about with their children.)
