Pattaya focuses on HIV prevention for Valentine’s event

PATTAYA:--Pattaya will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a parade and public-relations campaign focused on preventing HIV infections.

Deputy Mayor Vichien Pongpanit chaired a Jan. 4 meeting with public health workers, AIDS activities and tourism officials to prepare for the Feb. 14 events.

The plan is to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS prevention on the international “day of love”. Participants will hand out flyers and parade along Beach Road for their cause.

Local businesses will participate in the parade with other activities and musical performances hosted at Central Festival Pattaya Beach, including information on same-sex and safe-sex promotions. The mall also will offer discounted marriage packages for lovebirds.

I am glad they at least are making an effort on this.

I know a guy that had a business here and caught HIV.  Nice guy. Closed up shop and left. Sad disease.

it's all about awareness and i think it can only be a good thing. doesn't seem so long ago something like this would be unheard of here. i think that was part of the problem for a long time

Any idea how he caught it?

If they are truly serious about reducing HIV then they need to issue PrEP for free to sex workers. Sadly i think they are very backward on the subject

only last year they were giving PrEP for free to a large number of people from 16-20 or something like that, deemed to be among the highest risk group here. they are actually quite advanced in thailand. the TRC-ARC  and HIV-NAT all doing good work and research in Thailand. The drugs the surpress it and allow people to live a relatively normal life are also free or heavily subsidized.
