Rogue elephant forced back into Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary

A wild elephant that has been blamed for several fatalities and raided farms from Chanthaburi to Sa Kaew earlier in the month before fleeing to Cambodia has returned to the Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary.

The elephant also attacked and injured a woman in a Cambodian village last week.

The elephant had been herded by officials lighting firecrackers from a safe distance from Sa Kaew’s Wang Somboon district to Chanthaburi’s Soidao district until it went into the Ang Rue Nai forest at 3am on Monday, said Manote Rattanatrai, a wildlife official at Khao Soidao Wildlife Sanctuary.

Two wildlife sanctuary officials, paramilitary rangers, administrative officials and volunteers helped to drive the elephant.

The animal had emerged from the Thai forest on January 7, damaging crops at farms before moving to Cambodia, where it attacked Chok Kim Hay, a 32-year-old resident of the village of Damnaksan in Battambang province, after she stumbled across the animal last Thursday morning.

The elephant, which weighs six tonnes but does not have tusks, is known to have killed several people in Chanthaburi in recent years.

Last June, the animal made headlines when it broke through an electrified fence just three hours after being penned for “behaviour adjustment” in the Khao Takrup Forest Conservation Area in Sa Kaew.

It then disappeared into the Ang Rue Nai sanctuary before re-emerging this month.
