Probably hard for Thais to believe that other peoples also practice Buddhism. Thais can be so insular. :coffee1:

And that farang also eat rice in farangland!!!!

Well played fella. Beats prancing around with your shirt off thinking you are Buddha himself.

... and no matter ones view, there is around 400.000 monks in thailand and about 47.000 Temples - and most monks are basically laymen, ordinary people who attend a Temple for a lot of reasons so of course there almost have to be quite a few rotten apples among them! That does not change "the basics" and "our" monks in our jungle/forest Temples around our small village does not have any extravaganca, a few of them are good teachers and help the villagers in many ways! Like a few other farangs I know I am up every morning for the alms round, giving them food

It's also a nice way to let others feed your kids when you ran out of money for more important things. Let them be holy for a while and pray to them.

Let's see. There's the jaba selling one, the porn video selling one, the child molester one, oh I better stop here.

I'm afraid that he's more than Buddha himself, the way he's teaching his friends. I feel ashamed that I understand him.

Is it better to show your backside in a temple and post it?

I'm sorry,. but that's how ordinary folk behave in a country where Theravada Buddhism is the main religion.

P.S. After some research I've got to agree that the guy is a freak. His name is not Kock, it's Koch, the German name for cook.

The guy is a real Kock!!!

And the guy's really insane. From his facebook page: ( It's next to his absurd photo)

"..back in my Cave ..5555 Sabei Sabei ...
Love Peace & Respect to all beings  "

OMG, I'm out of words, how can Thais, or anybody else like that?

Love, Peace & Respect.

Sounds good to me. What do you find wrong with that?

World would be a better place if more people followed the above.

As for the guys and their tats, yes they are pretty full on, but so what? Never Judge a Book By it's Cover....

I agree and I always show respect to my in-laws and the people who deserve my respect.  Same wherever I am in the world.  However many who have lived in Thailand for years have witnessed time and time again the hypocrisy around the Thai Buddhist religion.  The never-ending reports of monks abusing their position and often abusing others, the illegitimate children, the drug dealing and taking, the drunken abbots with their Mia Nois etc. etc.  And the way the religion is used to excuse peoples behaviour.

These people do not deserve respect.  I am sure that there will be an argument that not all monks and abbots are the same and some are honorable.  I accept that but why do they condone and shield the others?

Much the same as peadophilia and child abuse is the clergy. Bad eggs in all religions

And here we go with all the bar stool legends and their inane comments about someone that has taken the time to grasp in depth some of the ways of the Thai people.

We’ll see plenty of comments calling this guy out yet we’re supposed to gasp and bow at the feet of those that ‘know everything’ there is to know about Thailand.

But isn't this person professing to know everything about Buddhism and Thailand and we are all expected to gasp and bow to him? He has found his religion, good for him, apparently he also worships ink. I just don't get that he is so wonderful.

This religion is no different to any and all religions in the world. They are only interested in 3 things and 3 things alone. Money, Power and Control of the population.!!!

No, they are professing to know how to show respect in a temple, and because people on social media praised him for being able to teach his friends well you thought that meant you were expected to gasp and bow?  Funny.

And for that, Money etc., they have to compete with politicians.

Yes, pat the tigers, put money in the donation box and buy the overpriced amulets.

I used 'gasp and bow' simply to reflect the post I quoted.

Being painted up like that just doesn't look very respectful.

Man, people need to take their heads out of their bums.

Thailand has one of the cruellest cultures on Earth and this is a result of their ethical baseline which is from their religion, just like Euro ethics grow from Christian teachings, Arabian peninsula ethics grow from Islam (even Indonesian Ethics come from Islam)...... I studied this stuff at Uni so before those who are not qualified to talk about this start........... Just don't.

Buddhist stuff  where I see this bowing down for whatever reason its subservience its starts  there, no need for any of it same with Muslim faith its  all pretty  grim.

I'm often embarrassed to see other farangs with their disrespectful behaviour in Thailand.
Thanks to these freaks to make me feel the same again.

All religions are "bad  eggs"

Wish somebody would put the word

' wows ' to bed. It's excessive use is wearing it out. The English language is rich and has many alternatives.

How about using ' impress ' instead or if that's too boring give

' gobsmacked ' a trial run.

Chuck wows in the bin for a while and give us all some relief.

Since when have tattoos been seen as being disrespectful in Thai Buddhism?

Are those tattoos or did those guys fall into a vat of ink?

Just to be clear... this is not about Buddhism, it's about Thai Buddhist ritual.  I don't think the Buddha himself would know what to do in this circumstance.

In fact, he'd be surprised to see these venerated images of himself. Piece of trivia: it was actually the Greeks who introduced the idea Buddhist statuary. There are no Buddha statues that predate the arrival of Alexander's army in India, and the earliest statues are distinctly Greek in their appearance.

No, not before Alexander, in fact about 700 years later!  And the mere existence of Grecco-Buddhist art does not translate into Greeks introducing the idea of making statues of Buddha, that is quite an assumption indeed.

There is a most enlightening article in Wiki about this.

Who would have thought that buddha's face was a Greek invention, resulting from Alexander's (a Macedonian, not a Greek) trip to Asia.....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greco-Buddhist_art

Then again, the face of jesus (one of the christian gods) also changes throughout the centuries.

People and their gods - a fascinating but often cruel story!

You got it, the face of Buddha is of Greek influence, but of course not necessarily the concept of making a statue of Buddha.

Theres a few who claim Alexander as being their own, Greeks, Macedonians and also Bulgarians, most correctly he was a Macedonian  as that is where he was from, but then he did unite all of Greece for the first time so they also like to think of him as theirs, and the Bulgarians like to claim Macedonia as being a part of their country so they too like to claim Alexander as being a Bulgar.

Ah! If only Thai people showed true Buddhist attitudes in their everyday lives.

Some would argue that "me me me" is a fundamental buddhist attitude.

Or to put it more mildly: I will take care of myself, what happens to others is not of my concern.

Yes, I agree 100%.

When I expose the lack of buddhist attitude in Thailand, I do not imply that people with other religions are any different.

And we should not limit this  to religions....

If only the Chinese showed socialist attitudes, if only the Americans would respect the free market, if if if.

If only people would stop blindly following whatever -ism.

It is difficult not to become cynical when observing human behaviour.

Remembering, of course, that many westerners are not Christians.

Only if you'll remember that many Thais are not Buddhist.
