BANGKOK — After proclaiming himself a politician with his soldiering days behind him, junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha is now mobilizing state agencies to pursue a new mission: teaching people about democracy.

An order signed Wednesday by Gen. Prayuth directed government and local authorities at all levels to implement a vision he calls Thai Niyom, which could be translated as a “Thai Way” or “Thai-ism.” The plan not only calls for encouraging “democratic participation,” but also improving the economy and building a stronger civil society.

Democracy includes freedom of speech. The right to able to discuss and debate. And though this discussing and debating may offend some, it’s just part of life. It’s how we ‘develop’ as humans.

As long as he’s blocking free speech, he’s nothing that even resembles a politician nor does he know anything about democracy. It can’t be Thai democracy because that’s not democracy. Don’t like it? Block yourself off from the world. Enjoy your homemade cars and technology. (And watches)

It also involves injecting another political neologism into the lexicon for the public to embrace as was attempted with pracharat (“government by the people”) and khuen kwam suk (“returning happiness to the people”).

Its hard to say is he delusional  or just taking the piss.

Democratic participation cannot occur without an election. Might that be the same election that has been on the agenda for 4 years and keeps getting postponed by yours truly himself. His self idolization has no bounds.

Hardly blocking free speech. Try criminalizing it.

And idiots like big P don't understand irony, would actually be quite scary if they did tbh.

As long as this guy has bootlickers with deep pockets and high level contacts he's safe.

The rank and file Thais don't seem to see this trainwreck for what it is yet, but the scandals they do see are waking a few more up. Little by little the junta are killing themselves

There’s no such thing as Thainess. It’s all in their minds.

"Thainess" is alive and well. Another word for it would be "xenophobia". They should be fighting it, not teaching it.

I have suspected for a while that his real intention was to introduce policies in a similar way to Field Marshal Pibulsongkram in the 30's.

Those policies went a long way to handicap creativity and independent thinking in Thailand. They explain a lot about how people behave here even today. But the Thai people 90 years ago did not have access to social media and the international community. It will be much more difficult to foist unpopular restrictions and illogical policies upon them, that only serve to repress and contain the aspirations of the middle and working class.

Just What is ‘Thai-ism?

Getting as much as you can for yourself, during the time you close friends and neighbour are starving outside your front gate.
