Beware: No e-cigarettes in Thailand

webfact

Recommended Posts

The overwhelming evidence (from independent, non-tobacco industry funded sources) definitively proves that vaping is a far, far less harmful way for nicotine addicts to feed their habit.

If (and only if) it is true that protecting tobacco tax revenue is considered more important than allowing people to make safer choices regarding their own health, then that is an act of pure avarice that calls into question the government's integrity.

Regardless of the motivation for the banning of vaping, I suspect this issue is causing huge harm to the country's image overseas, investability and tourist industry. I can only hope the situation is resolved before further damage is done.

Smoking should be forbidden everywhere in public. Let people kill themselves at home if their brain is not working well enough to understand (my appreciation to Darwin) but do not bother others.

I noticed repeatedly that people smoke in restaurants regarding them as an open place and the fan is doing the rest to bring the smoke to other guests even when eating. Such situations should be avoided.

The vape ban list shows 22 countries.

Thailand has 32,000 hectares as of 2012 for tobacco production.

http://www.tobaccoatlas.org/topic/growing-tobacco/

  • If one examines the vape ban list for other countries with equal or greater than Thailand's land for tobacco production, there are a total five countries: Thailand, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina and Indonesia. However, both Columbia and Cambodia have >11,000 hectares so I included them as well that makes seven countries.
  • If one further examines the vape ban list for marijuana use (personal/medicinal), there are four countries: Austria, Belgium, Mexico and Uruguay.
  • If one also examines the vape ban list for hookah and Shisha, there are two countries: Jordon and Egypt.

Thus, there are thirteen countries from the vape ban list that appear to have hypocritical health policies. Money & Politics?

What remains are nine countries out of 193 countries in the world (2018) that appear to have consistent health policies with regard to vape and tobacco related products ban: Brunei, Malaysia, Oman, Panama, Singapore, Taiwan, Tajikistan, UAE, and Venezuela.

The article quoted a Thai government spokesman saying the ban was “introduced for health reasons and that it was originally suggested because electronic cigarettes were luring young people into smoking.”

And it had nothing at all to do with the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly losing massive revenues !

I agree - if young people want to smoke they will try the real thing - not an artificial alternative that is designed to help people STOP smoking! And as yet there is no tax on e-cigarettes, but you can bet your bottom dollar that someone is giving serious thought to the matter!

Vaping is not banned in Belgium so this list is dubious at best. They have some strange laws in Belgium but it's not banned.

This list of countries contains a large number of places which are on my 'shitlist' already, the usual suspects.

Maintaining income levels - absolutely correct.

Years ago, I was sitting in a beer bar in Pattaya. I knew the owner, having spoken with her before.

I asked why her beer prices had increased. The reply was that as there were less customers in town, they needed to charge more for the beer to still make money.

No word of of a lie. As we cynics say: Thai logic.

Absolutely correct, and not cynical at all!  A little complex of bars opened in our resort (about 10 in a horseshoe style with a fountain in the middle - quite pretty, really), but after a couple of weeks, they were charging on average 35 -40 baht more for a beer than other bars in the nearby vicinity. When asked the same question as above, and being given the same answer, I said "But, out of 10 bars you have 3 customers - us - and we aren't staying to pay these prices, so where does that leave you?" She just shrugged her shoulders - as she probably did when the bars all closed a few months later!

P.S. Regarding "Thai logic" another classic example -  for instance, you are riding your motor cycle on the correct side of the road (left) and some (Thai) idiot ploughs into you having been riding on the right hand side of the road for about 100 yards in anticipation of making a right hand turn. His fault, you would presume? Not at all! It's your fault, because if you (farang) hadn't been there in the first place, the accident wouldn't have happened! An equally bizarre story was a motor bike taxi had a small accident with another Thai motorcyclist. The motor bike taxi driver was at fault, but he wanted his passenger to pay for the damage to the other motor bike because if he hadn't hired him, he wouldn't have been in that place where the accident happened! (True story - I was that man, but didn't even pay for the ride, but nowadays I would probably give him 50 baht for the ride and walk away - too many guns and machetes about these days!)

Better still, if you like to smoke an electronic cigarette look for a country which doesn't have such draconian laws. There are lots of alternatives to Thailand if you're a 'vaper'.

I'd like to see more official warnings like this from different countries around the world.

When you can end up in prison for something which is not illegal almost everywhere else in the world it should be a priority for governments to make everyone aware of this fact.

I hope the Thai tourist industry dies a slow, painful and very costly death due to the many shortsighted and draconian law changes in recent years.

Many people hate vaping. It's anti social. It stinks. It triggers ex smokers. It normalises the act of smoking to children. It's dangers are as of yet unclear. It functions as a gateway to  tobacco.  Now the straights and squares are getting a taste of their own medicine with regards to the oppression of Recreational Drug Users. 555

No.Some European values are needed and wanted here. The majority of people do not smoke. Most Thais do not smoke. Most Thais would be happy to see a smoking ban enforced fully in all public spaces.

I saw a holiday maker last week smoking one I approached him and told him that if he were to be caught he could face imprisonment he thought I was joking until I explained to him that It was regarded as a drug . As there are so many people from around the world smoking these maybe it’s time that it should be advertised both by the airport authorities and travel agents as a lot of people seem to be unaware of the law. Thailand must be one of a very few countries to ban this product I wonder why ?

See the list above. Plenty of countries have banned them or their use in enclosed spaces

I do not understand why no announcement is made before landing about Sheehan tobacco, E Cig,Porn etc etc after which they arrest people without being properly informed in advance.?

But then it is too late, you are in LoS. Should the airlines not tell you WHEN YOU BOOK THE TICKET, not before check-in or boarding. Can't believe Belgium and Austria ban them.

Incorrect!  (fake news)... vaping is still legal... (AS IN UNREGULATED BUT AVAILABLE) in Taiwan, lndonesia, Malaysia (some states have' banned' vaping though). Not sure about Cambodia but certainlly vape paraphernalia is available there. . Hong Kong has banned juice with nicotine but you can buy ecigs and non-nic juice openly and legally. And vaping is legal and regulated in All EU countries as enshrined by the EU Tobacco Products Directive which came into force 2 years ago. So Thailand and Singapore are the Only SE Asian countries to have an outright ban,  together with Japan (where you are allowed to buy vape products from overseas  and many other non vape alternatives to conventional cigarettes are widely available and very popular).

So do they regard tobacco not as drug?

It's been stated again&again that ecigs are far less harmful than smoking and can aid giving up altogether.Infact in the UK it was suggested they may soon be available on the nhs with a prescription.

A smoker only wants one thing from a smoke and thats old Nick O'teen.Ecigs give you that without all the carcinogenics. It's all about the government not being able to tax ecigs in the same way as cigarettes.Do the government ever stop to think, the money it's costing them treating smokers in hospitals up and down the country for smoking related diseases?

Walked around the local town Saturday and saw a ECig shop doing lots of business not a policeman in sight. Then I realized where I was and that the country I was in had stronger fair laws. 100% legal in the UK as it helps people give up the killer version. So Thai's are telling me they know better than the UK doctors who prefer the Ecigs to the real thing. Never in a month of Sundays do Thai doctors know more that the UK doctors. Just corruption again

Tourists will vote with their feet.

Says it all - everything - the works - the complete shebang, and the full shilling!

Fear not! -  The Tobacco Monopolies Commission (:cheesy:) will be making a healthy (pun intended!) contribution to the appropriate Government licensing authority to ensure that e- cigs are kept illegal!

tourists aren't going anywhere. i actually use ecigs but don't use them outside anymore, well when i go to bkk anyway, my local area is fine. you're correct that the UK docs say they are less harmful than real cigarettes, which i believe they are less harmful. however, i still smoke the tobacco monolopys smokes from time to time so i guess they won that little battle : )

Happy, you should not be doing that in Thailand Ecigs are illegal and I do not want to hear you where locked up for it. Local cigs from TTM are really at the bottom of the pile, they make you cough your heart up, made me want to stop smoking they where so bad. The wife comes home most days and tells me of yet another thing she has seen or learned about the UK heath service which as we know gets lots of bad publicly, but she is so complementary to it compared to back home. So back home must be really bad, just like those TTM cigs.

This is my source.

Can you provide me with an alternative that is not, as you so eloquently put it a "pile of crap"?

To be fair. It's not entirely correct or incorrect. Qatar is banned, but not on the list. Belgium is not banned entirely, just the the nicotine content and the size if the tank.

I don't think there is a comprehensive list of the current restrictions because it is changing month by month.

Tobacco companies will soon steal the rights to the technology and, believe me, everyone will then vape away to their hearts content as all doctors unanimously agree it is suddenly better for your health....and somehow more expensive also.

Any cig made there are TTM the ones in the red packets are FTTM mind you UK £7.65 for a cheap packet of 20. Sad thing is the government takes all the tax and then says its harming the NHS with the costs smoking causes, bullS>>> flys in all directions, tax is about £6.50 you can buy heath insurance for that a day. last time I looked Silkcut was over £9.00 a pack on the motorway at waitrose £11.30 a pack (20 cigs)
