I tend to disagree.

Chinese tourists spent 12% more on tourism abroad in 2016

2016 was another strong year for outbound tourism from China, the world’s leading outbound market. International tourism expenditure grew by US$ 11 billion to US$ 261 billion, an increase by 12% (in local currency). The number of outbound travellers rose 6% to 135 million in 2016. This growth consolidates China’s position as number one source market in the world since 2012, following a trend of double-digit growth in tourism expenditure every year since 2004.

With a 12% increase in spending, China continued to lead international outbound tourism, followed by the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and France as top five spenders.

Agree with you - while many Chinese are poor, there is a growing middle-class; which will eventually want to travel.

the US Commercial Service in Germany shared some arrival and spend figures for various countries with me earlier this year.  They obviously wanted to show how important Germany was a an inbound tourist source for the USA - but the numbers I was most surprised about were that China was #5 in arrivals and #1 in spending!

Let's keep in mind that 5% of the Chinese population equals about 70 million people with passports... there are some problems in the Chinese economy at the moment, but in 10 years, without any doubt, that number will at least double.

Americans MAY use a passport to fly domestically, but it is not required.

Most state driver licenses and all military/federal ID cards can be used as well.

I'll try next time, but will keep passport handy if ever.

As the topic seems to interest a lot of people here it might be worth the recent NY Times series of articles about the growth of China.

A place to start might be: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/21/world/asia/china-rules-takeaways.html

I think the general heading of the series of articles is the new "China project". About a 1/2 dozen articles on their growth and some insight on how it evolved. I'm guessing no one has really been able to calculate the impact of a growing Chinese middle class in terms of expectations, positive and negative effects of Chinese tourism etc....needless to say, it's a topic that's going to get kicked around for the foreseeable future.

I hope yankees aren't dupes by their leftitsts eager to kowtow to China just to piss off Trump. The article seems to glorify China's loanshark imperialism and abuse of their domestic workers, unfair trade restrictions etc. They're plotting to take over the word by using the western customer wanting cheap crap produced by their own peasants to bankroll it.

The speed of the takeover was astonishing, what 1-2 years? I was planning to go some day but it's a no-go zone now. A warning example.

They've already invaded Siem Reap. Angkor Wat is crawling with them. The airport! Flying out of Siem Reap recently really brought home the gravity of the situation. Have they reached Sihanoukville in large numbers?

Reached it..... they own it!

“... only 5% of Chinese citizens hold a passport (in USA it is 40%) ...”

In the European Union many people do not (permanently) own passports as they have national ID cards, which are valid throughout the European Union, the Schengen area and some other countries.

I don't see the above connection!

what has China and Schengen got in common?

and, short on finding all the actual facts; Chinese, are on the list of Countries that their citizens require prior applications for Short Term Schengen Visa

and China visiting Thailand; well they need a passport like most other countries that do not border Thailand directly.

Think of the turmoil if all Chinese had passports!!!

they'd be swimming past the Spatleys to inundate whatever other shores they next drag themselves up on to...

Anyone that owns property in Pattaya should more then welcome the Chinese.

I have a friend in the business who told me 75% of the business now is Chinese buyers.

If they were not here, that 10,000 plus properties on the market would be much higher.

Yes, they can be annoying.  But, I certainly do not let them ruin my life and any mature adult hopefully feels the same.

Well no western farang with a brain should be buying any kind of real estate until the ever changing visa situation stabilizes.....Sense the Ruble went into the toilet that only leaves the Thais and Chinese as buyers....

Well maybe. Probably the strength of the baht is a more important factor. Pay extra attention to the primacy of location is a good idea if considering jumping in anyway and on the other side of the coin maybe avoiding 'bargains' in secondary locations.

They are getting more independent and getting away from their herders and tour buses.

Until the time the government decides it is high time to pull in the reigns, the people get too many strange ideas abroad.

And better to keep the money inside China.

Just bought a tidy well maintained 36sqm second hand, high floor, sea view condo for 1.3m in Jomtiem in  a well looked after block. It had been on the market for a year and dropped from 2m to 1.3 when we bought it. Needed to raise the 800k for his visa.  A Chinese buyer at the same time bought 5 from a farang liquidating his portfolio. The old investment maxim is be fearful when others are greedy and be greedy when others are fearful. At the land office saw a couple of Russians there as well.

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be more and more young Chinese men with a Thai girlfriend  ... and stunners too?

They are probably not meeting in beerbars, so it must be online or in discos/nightclubs.

English seems to be the language for these couples to communicate.
