CityNews – Chiang Mai people gathered for a big merit making event on Peng Pud day.

 

Peng Pud is a midnight offering ceremony usually occurring on the 15th day of the waxing moon that falls on a Wednesday, of an unspecified month, and is one of the most important merit making occasions for Lanna people. This year the ceremony commenced around 10pm on January 30th with a sermons in temples which continued into the merit making around midnight of the 31st. Over 300 monks were reportedly gathered at Wat Upakhut with many Buddhists participating.

Call me old school, but I think "merit making" should be what your actions are in everyday life. Having special days strikes me as something like one "be good" day, and the rest of the time keep up with your normal self serving behaviors.
