A wedding between a 36-year-old Frenchman and a 23-year-old Cambodian man was prohibited on Saturday evening by provincial immigration police in Kratie province’s Kratie town. Nuth Sokheng, Kratie town deputy police chief, said the wedding was stopped because there was no law on marriage between two men in Cambodia, making it illegal.

“The reason why our local authority has decided to stop their marriage is because it was an illegal marriage,” he said. “They did not inform or write to our authority for authorisation but celebrated it, illegally.” “Also, in Cambodia, we do not have a law which authorises two men to get married, especially a foreign man and a Cambodian like this,” he added. “This is the first time that a foreign man and a Cambodian man have tried to get married in Cambodia.”

Mr Sokheng identified the men as Frank Novak, a French national, and Loeuk Chanrattanan, from Kratie province. Deputy provincial police chief Brigadier General Prumh Phaneth said local authorities were right to ban the wedding due to a lack of laws to recognize unions between two men.
