That is not true.

Nowadays, booking.com has many "prepaid" rates on offer that are non-refundable.

At the same time, their sister company agoda is now offering "pay at the property" - rates.

They mix their business model

each hotel sets its policy>

some allow the customer to pay at the hotel, others want prepayment
hotel ALSO sets its cancellation policy

Booking.com invoices the hotel monthly for commissions due

Who is the CEO? I wondered if the hotel canceled my booking because I gave negative reviews, but to be fair, I also gave positive reviews. ie, one neg view, shower was completely cold. One pos view, cleanliness was excellent.

So the hotel checks up on reviews for any customer it receives? And that includes finding out which is the username of the person who booked?

No.

Yeah, I think the bad review thing not likely. How would canceling your booking encourage you to write better reviews?

Do you guys really see a significant discount from what you can get direct from the hotels?

Depends. Sometimes direct is cheaper.

I am almost permanenetly staying in hotels and it is very unusual to find a walk in rate cheaper than the cheapest booking agency rate. To the OP i would agree with others on here that 'Booking.com' are pretty good at resolving issues and i think you will be fine for refund

I’m sorry I was not clear. I was not talking about the walk-in or “rack-rate”, I am talking about pre-booking on the hotel’s website.

I just do not see that much of a difference.

Hotels often have a wider variety rooms to choose from.

Also, I think at least some of the hotels do not give “points” for rooms booked through third-party sites.
