Qualified persons urged to apply for EC while parties to meet on regulations

BANGKOK, 27th March 2018 (NNT) – The President of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has invited qualified individuals to enter the running to become Election Commission (EC) members, after the first day of applications saw no candidates. 

NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, has joined existing EC members in encouraging qualified individuals to seek to join the EC as applications are open until April 9. The president nevertheless rejected speculation he would invite any particular individual to apply, saying the selection process requires a majority vote by the existing EC, stating he will only consider such a move if no one applies to join. 

The first day of applications, which took place at the Office of the Senate Secretariat yesterday (March 26), saw no applications filed. 

Meanwhile, a meeting to explain the Political Party Act to existing parties has received confirmations to attend from 54 parties from the total 69 currently in operation. An estimated 300 people are expected to join the conference on March 28, where the EC will explain regulations under the act, including party maintenance fees, the primary vote system and how to request permission fo a party meeting from the National Council for Peace and Order. 

Registration of new parties has continued steadily with Pol Col Sornsak Kaewraksa, a former deputy commander of the Counter Corruption Police Division, yesterday placing the 72nd application for a party to be dubbed the Siang Prachachon Party. The 73rd application was for the Tanmacheep party by Somporn Thongtanunam and the 74th was for the Thai Asa Party by Capt Amorn Yochan.

That paves the way for uncle Somchai and cousin Daeng then.........and my good mate Noi.
