Tourism Min: Traditional costume trend forges unity between different generations

 

 

BANGKOK, 8th April 2018 (NNT) – The Ministry of Tourism and Sports believes the government’s campaign to encourage people to wear traditional costumes will foster strong relations and unity among different generations. 

Tourism Minister Wirasak Kowsoorad said the trend among Thais to wear Thai traditional attire on special occasions was created by the Love and Warmth at Winter's End Festival and the popular period drama “Love Destiny.” The minister expects the trend to continue throughout the Songkran Festival to be celebrated across Thailand this week. 

Not only does it teach Thai people about their history and culture, wearing traditional costumes also brings different generations together, encouraging youngsters to approach their elders and ask about Thai history. 

In addition, he said the trend has significantly boosted the tourism industry and built a positive image of Thailand. Since the launch of the popular period drama on television, Thais and foreigners have been visiting historic places such as the ancient city of Ayutthaya, in much bigger numbers. 

Lastly, the minister said Thailand is expected to welcome 35 million foreign visitors this year.

From what era do these traditional costumes come from? I can't picture the majority of Thais dressing like this 50 or more years ago.  I can maybe visage a few well to do and influential back in the time being able to afford such attire but not your traditional farmer or worker.

Sad that they don't learn about Thai history at school, especially objectively, rather than only the drivel about how they won battles against foreign aggressors.

Having said that, "their elders" probably were subjected to the same Thainess version of history lessons in their school days too.

The youngsters won't give a toss about Thai history because mobile phones weren't invented then.

 

If "Turning the clock back" means 70+ Baht to the Pound is going to make a return, I'll wear Thai traditional costume every day; to hell with the street cred!

Governments in the past have resurrected legends, myths and symbols to distract, hypnotize and otherwise lead the masses towards unquestioning survitude. Sadly, this undereducated collection cannot see past today, let along learn from history what is going on around them

These costumes are NOT traditional, unless you believe a very specific history to be "the truth"!

And what are young people to achieve, by asking their elders for "Thai- history"?

They will hear a bunch of glorified fairytales, that have NOTHING to do with reality!

Myanmar Parliament.

Aside from the obvious military presence in the Myanmar parliament, the fashions/clothing shown in the above photo are normal attire for Burmese members of their parliament.

. It was only since the 2014 coup and Prayuth's wish to go back to the future, that we saw many Thai politicians dressed in "chut thai phra ratcha niyom". 

All were usually dressed in western style. 

This new obsession, in Thailand,  with clothing from a by-gone era does nothing, IMHO, to unite the country. The people in the  popular Thai drama are not average citizens, they are of the aristocrat and ruling class.

For example Indian people dress the way they do because that is what they've always done, except for a few during the Raj, otherwise, they don't as a rule wear western style clothing.

To expect the average Thai to go out and spend thousands of baht on fancy dress is frankly absurd.

What Prayuth's doing is asking people to think of the glorious past of Siam.

Imagine if Queen Elizabeth ordered her MPs to look like this in the Commons today.

I seriously doubt the ladies of the Siamese aristocracy went topless. The country people for sure.

Thanks for those superb photos of England's finest Pomp and Pageantry with a dash of Circumstance. Thailand can also dazzle on royal occasions. But that is from hundreds of years of history not something from a soap opera on TV.
