So you are confused? according to your saddo you are, then let me spell it out. Drunken drivers and motorbike riders should automatically have their vehicles confiscated, and not returned back to their owners.
lucjoker
what about the hundreds more that die 1 day later in hospital /at home ? They are never in the statistics, only the death on the moment of the crash . So numbers say nothing. If they stop a car ,and the driver is NOT drunk , they must give him 500 bht ..........it could be a costly insentif.....probably 10 000 bht in 10 days? Jonmarleesco
If it weren't so tragic, it would be laughable. Every year, the same repetitive guff rolled out by the authorities; every year, the same predictable outcome, the same predictably crass stupidity of so many morons on the roads, the same demonstrable ineptness of those, so-say, in charge. Still, they can take comfort in the knowledge that at least one Thai-held world first will remain intact for the foreseeable future.

Whoever is is charge should hang their head in shame and resign because it's obvious they have no idea how to deal with the problem. I think one factor (of many) is there hasn't been a decades long public campaign led by angry Mothers, which over time, has achieved the goal of making drink driving morally reprehensible social stigma, not "just" against the law. Hell these days, you would almost rather deflower the virgin mary herself than be tarred and feathered as a despicable drunk driver. Apart from that, there are far more people than police obviously and while I'm no fan of Thai Police, in their defense, they can only do so much; same as my own home country government. Blab about it endlessly and set up highway "safety check points" and patrols to find and remove as many drunk drivers as they can.

Khun Eddie Edward
Draconian measures required to prevent this. Zero tolerance whether during Songkran or not. Compulsory (meaningful) custodian sentences for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, whether or not you cause an accident - plus automatic 10 year driving ban. Life ban if you cause a death or disabling injury to someone. Loss of vehicle - to be sold (even if just for scrap) to help the victims. Public shaming. The first year this is implemented won't make much difference as folks will not bother, but after the initial 250,000 or so offenders are punished this way, it will deter others. Don't drink and drive, it ruins lives - particularly yours.

Yeah before we get all totalitarian how about we start with, Proper licensing procedures A proper road safety campaign A pro active police force with a highway patrol that is willing and will enforce road safety rules Fines and penalties on par with the rest of the civilised world ( as in you don't bang someone up for a low range DUI), the prison system is already overcrowded. Custodial sentence and 10 year driving ban for everyone driving under the influence? At any level? Bit OTT, IMO
hotchilli
Sirichan said that 32,592 of those cases involved motorcyclists. Officers have seized 835 motorcycles and total confiscated 356 motorcycle driving licences. The remaining 23,459 cases involved private cars or public vehicles, leading to 494 seized cars and 1,741 confiscated driver’s licences. And there lays the problem... no deterrent, all drunk drivers should have licences revoked for one year minimum!!! They think it's worth the risk!! Time to change Thai mind-sets!!! Bit OTT, IMO think you will find many already drive without a licence, so introducing bans isn't a deterrent and negates your point 1, 2, and 5. Point 3 would need an absolute miracle to even get the BIB to think about it and as 4, who will fine them and who will collect the fines and if they can't be found (fairly normal) what then? 55Jay
Right, the OTT draconian "crack downs" always fizzle out in a few days to a few weeks. The punishments also tend to be totally out of whack and that fosters the back hander system. But you see how the continued pressure about drink driving in recent years has been driving up the asking price for drink driving back hander, for farangs in particular. What's the going rate in Pattaya now? 30,000?
