You do know as a Thai citizen she is automatically covered for free under the Thailand Universal Health Care Program (a.k.a., 30 baht program)?

We also signed up for insurance for my Thai Girlfriend as well. 18 200 a year with https://www.krungthai-axa.co.th/en/ihealthy

I would not trust national health care program, and I have money for better treatment, it could be a tough one. So choice is easy, and will not put me in a difficult situation where I have to choose to let her go trough goverment treatment, or privat hospital trough insurance.

While getting govt treatment can often be "wait-oriented" my Thai in-laws and friends use it extensively....and it works for them....and it's basically free.  Can't tell you how many times the wife and I have drove the mother-in-law to a govt hospital for treatment....works fine...free... but usually plan on a half day for each visit.

And many of the doctors/specialists in govt hospitals also work in private hospitals.  Very common to see doctor XYZ working at a govt hospital during certain days of the weeks and other days of the week at private hospitals.  Quite a few of my doctors the wife and I see at our private hospital work that way...split their work between govt and private hospitals.

Im more concerned about a bit more serious incidents than daily hospital visits. Where treatment, medication and recovery will take time and money.

And that is exactly where coverage under the govt program is so valuable...in those cases of long term hospital stays and follow-on treatment.   I've seen such care/treatment with my Thai in-laws for cancer, stroke, kidney disease/dialysis, major accidents, eyesight treatment/cataract removal, blood infections, various chronic diseases, etc.    Not uncommon for Thais to use the govt care to cover the bulk of the care/charges while they pay extra/out of their own pocket for such things as private rooms because under govt care you are usually place in a ward vs private/semi-private room.

The wife and I did the same for the mother-in-law when she had major back surgery which included transport back and forth to Bangkok for an MRI, 12 days in the hospital recovering from the surgery, lots of medications, 3 or 4 follow-up visits, X-rays, etc...etc..etc...   Final bill for me was Bt800 per day for the private room which the family members stayed in also to keep company with the mother-in-law 24/7.   But she could have stayed in the ward for free.  The bill would have been hundred of thousands of baht if having to pay out of pocket....but since it was done under the govt coverage it was basically free except or the extra private room we paid for out of pocket.    I can easily estimate the mother-in-law has had around 500,000 baht in medical care over the last 5 years or so....with the excpetion of the few thousand baht I paid for 12 days of private room charges the govt paid/provided covered the rest.

I guarantee you if you ask most Thais (especially poor or middle class Thais) what is the most important benefit they have for themselves and family...and assuming they think about it and answer truthfully...it will be their free govt medical care although they will usually complain about the half-day wait time.   I have no doubt the population would rebel if the govt ever tried to take it away.  Of course people will always prefer private care over govt care primarily to avoid a lot of the wait time and get more personal attention....lower wait time/more personal attention which does not necessarily equate to better care since many govt and private hospitals have the same equipment and same doctors, but will surely equate to more expensive care.

Nothing wrong in buying medical care coverage.   Just wanted to point out that Thailand has a universal medical care coverage commonly referred to as the 30 baht program.  It isn't perfect, but does provides free medical care for Thais....those Thais who wish to utilize it.

Ok, I need to check a bit more, since I thought the government program was shit, and my gf say they only advise paraceptomol. It might be true backcountry, but we will live in Hua Hin, and Hua Hin hospital have a quite good reputation, campare to many other government hospitals. Same quality as Army hospitals some say. And as you pointed out, most of the doctors and nurses work all 3 big hospitals here, so the expertise should be the same as well, not only equipment and so.

& also pending where you are (this is general ), the private hospitals may not have the equipment concerning the injury or treatment.

So you may end up in a Government hospital
