Good morning.
Could anyone please advise on something that I'm unsure about as Ive never done a transfer before.
I wish to fly into bkk and then up to Chiang mai 1.5 hours later.
Could anyone please advise on do I need to go through passport control in bkk airport or would I go directly to my connecting flight with a different airline to Ching mai.
Thank you
Im guessing that my luggage will be transferred also???

You would enter thailand (immigration) in Bangkok, then go to the domestic departures to check-in and catch your domestic flight to CM.

If its two separate airlines and not a code-share arrangement, I imagine you would collect your own bag and then take it to domestic check-in. Your bag will only go to CM if its booked through at the check-in for the first flight and they would only do that if you have a ticket with the first airline for a "connection" through to CM.

It doesn't sound like you have a "Connecting" flight (part of a single ticket/booking), it sound like you have two separate tickets with two separate airlines.

What airlines is this about?

Can you name please.

To Chiang Mai: Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways or Thai Smile?

BTW: Nowadays quite tight. Might work but a game of luck (especially if you are not on business/fast track).

Could I whizz through the Thai nationals section with no questions as Im British but both my children are half Thai and hold Thai passports?

All depends on if you  get your luggage checked straight through at you initial check in. It is possible to do this even if it was not a through booking but 2 separate tickets but I have heard many an objection not to go to the extra work in doing this, the computers are not compatible etc.

If your luggage is checked only to BKK then sorry, via immigration to landside, get your bags and check in again upstairs.

Emirates has a code share with Bangkok Airways so you may be able to do a transit through BKK without having to pass through immigration.  Ask Emirates

If you are ticketed through to CNX on the single ticket then its the separate (and quicker, usually)  immigration at BKK, with only customs check at CNX. If you are on separate tickets expect to have to clear both clear customs and immigration at BKK, and then check in again at BKK as a domestic passenger.

If you transfer to a domestic flight at Suvarnabhumi  then you will not pass through the main passport control so it shouldn't be too busy.

Also if your luggage goes straight through to Chiang Mai then once you disembark the plane at CM you will need to go to International arrivals (Not domestic) to collect your bags because they need go through customs.

I make three flights to CM.  Two by Air France and then B'kok Airways.  All bought at the same time.  At the first check-in, my luggage is booked through to CM.  No problems there!  When I get to B'kok, I do not turn left for Immigration, I keep going to Transit. There are Three Immigration desks with someone standing in front of each to inspect your papers  A couple of seconds later, you are in front of the Imm. official.

Once there was someone else there, and the other times, I have had  Immigration all to myself.  The hallway for gate to cM is almost in front of you.

Yes, I have done the same. Watch out for luggage weights, I had to pay extra as international lets you carry a lot more than domestic. Fee was almost as much as my ticket from BBK to CM.

Never had problems with that, in all these years I have been going to CM.  It's part of the deal between the main airline and their counterpart.  Even on the return flight, CM to B'kok, they take the International weight.

I must say that, not to have to put up with all that interminable wait at Immigration is wonderful.

It might also hinge on how knowledgeable the staff at departing airport are.

My first trip was Vancouver, Narita,  Bkk,  Phuket.

Buddy living in Phuket told me check your bag thru and in Japan they'll put a sticker on my shirt. When arriving Bkk you'll go a different way and not go thru customs with my bags. You will go thru customs in Phuket and collect bag from int'l terminal.

When I checked in at Air Canada the lady told me "no way" You must go thru customs at point of entry Bangkok (Canadian Rule) pick up your bags and go to domestic departures. What a hassle!

In Narita I see all these people getting stickers on their lapels and when we arrive in Bkk they are escorted thru a different way while I go thru customs after picking up my checked bag. In  Phuket I am the only one picking up my bag from domestic.

I hate Air Canada to this day.

Who would stamp your passport with an admitted to stay stamp?

Check your bags through to Chiang Mai on your first flight. When you arrive in BKK you need to go through the "special" (domestic transit) immigration but it is usually only a few minutes wait.  There are signs at International Arrivals to direct you to Chiang Mai/Phuket domestic flights. You get given a "QM" (I think) sticker and then go to the domestic departure gate . On arrival at CNX they split you off and send you to international baggage arrival. And if your flight is slightly delayed (which mine was last time) you will need to do a fast jog if you only have 1,5 hours (I asked about the electric jeep things they are a thousand baht apparently).

If you have to go through the usual immigration at BKK, get your bags, then check in  again for the domestic flight 1.5 days might be better.

I agree. I had a carry on bag I had used on multiple airlines (including Air Canada!) and on one leg of the trip some idiot kid told me I had to check it in. As I was arguing with him, several people with larger bags breezed my.

I agree, I'll never fly Air Canada again.

I live in Chiang Mai and fly through BBK entering the country. I've never had problems checking baggage through. And immigration is a breeze at transfer.

The problem would only be encountered if you collect your luggage at BKK and then check in again for CM.

No, I flew from Seattle to BBK on Eva, then Bkk Air to CM. Checked my bags all the way to CM in Seattle. Eva gives you 2 bags I think 50 lbs each. Bkk Air gives you one bag 35 lbs. (unless you add) when I checked in at BBK Air transfer in BBK they charged me for the extra bag.

How did they know you had 2 bags?

Always something new! I just packed two bags for Air China flight LAX-BKK. Website says two bags allowed with economy ticket. Printed confirmation which said one bag allowed. looked at site again. Fine print days baggage chart only a guideline and actual allowance is what is printed on your confirmation!
