Comments and advice required on HOW I COULD RETIRE IN THAILAND, :-)

Recommended Posts

As each persons experience is subjective - what is enjoyable for me may not be enjoyable for the next person.

About getting first a tourist visa, I don’t know. I already spent about 3 months on a whole in Thailand over the last few years. It’s not much ... but I think this country would be ok for me though the heat is a bit over the top at times. But it’s ok ... :-)
I think I would enjoy some nightlife ... but not too intense either. To be honest ... I’ve got to know Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Sukhotai, Ayuthaya, Kanchanaburi, BKK, ... Not that much.
I haven’t seen any beach !!! ... SO I DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT LIFE in those places
I DON’T THINK I’D LIKE SOMETHING TOO TURISTY but there maybe lots of places I’d like ...
I THOUGHT I COULD JUST GO AND LIVE THERE ...
I THOUGHT PERHAPS I could get advice on this forum about agreable places on the coast ... not very far from towns.

Seems like a bunch of 'I think' or 'I thought' - you just need to come do it and see if you enjoy and not worry about another persons experience  - note I did not say wisdom - as noted by others there are pitfalls in Thailand - read this  - http://www.snouts-in-the-trough.com/archives/3500.

As noted get a Non-OA retirement visa and come enjoy Thailand LOS.

Hi Franck,

my profile/thinking/past situation in France/age etc, is pretty similar to yours. I retired and moved permanently in Thailand 4 years Ago. I gonna give you my perspective. But first, be aware that many comments on this site are biased.

To start with, obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand is easy and straightforward, and it would be better to get it in France, before your move. This would be a 1 year visa, renewable in Thailand every year without trouble, providing you can prove sufficient retirement income and/or savings. Once in Thailand, you will have to re-confirm the address of the place you are staying in every 90 days, this is a little annoyance but achieved within an hour at the local immigration, and can also apply online. That is it for the administration ! Really nothing compared to France....

Anyway, I am living in Chiang Mai with a lovely girl 20 years younger than me (I am 59) for more than 3 years now. I am much happier here and going back to France is totally out of my mind.

I am against the mariage institution, but obviously, and as in any long time relationship, it is necessary to build in some kind of security in a couple. We do not know what can happen tomorrow, therefore I bought a decent house for my girlfriend and made it clear to my family that whatever I own in Thailand (money in thai bank, car, motorbike etc) will be the property of my partner should I die. I also support her family, and pay the University for her 2 daughters. All of this is affordable in this country. For a very decent life here, I would say you need about 2000 euros per month.

Happiness is round the corner, but please ignore the comments of 60 years old chaps living in Pattaya, short timing 20 years old beauties...

This comment surely has to be a joke. Yes, come to Thailand, find a younger woman and support all her family.

What a way to feel loved and then make a comment about guys living in Pattaya.

Weird.

Your idea can work, but must know and live with that girl AT LEAST 5 year.

this is the mistake of many, they marry after just 3-6 months in Thailand....

It varies.  I married my wife after about a year.   She wasn't sure but it happened.  Been married 40 years this fall and she still isn't sure about me. But we get along just fine most days.

Plenty of provinces  close to Bangkok that are excellent with good local  people but you must learn how to speak Thai so you can socialise with confidence.

Downside is you will need a car and Thai licence. Cars are cheap at the moment . Dont ride a motorbike anywhere in Asia.

Always RENT houses or units......never by  property assets in Thailand expecially land.  Its not legally  yours.  Home rentals are dirt cheap but you need to shop around for  a month atleast.  Landlords are good here, much better than the west.

Stay single unless you meet a rich Thai woman.  LOL   Its possible but dont hold your breathe.

Stay away from all the beer bar hooker towns  ie Pattaya,Phuket,Hua Hin, CM  etc etc  they have the lowest Thai people and the lowest foreigners.

As long as you have alot of money  or you have a monthly  income stream from overseas you can live and travel in Thailand. Its not cheap anymore unless youre a non drinker and dont go out whoring.

Be very careful about starting a business with 'good honest Thais' or even worse..a  farang.

You will need to live here  quite a while  before you get an  idea of how things work in Thaland.

Always be polite....trust no-one.

Try Jomtien. PLENTY of affordable condos on Jomtien Beach Road and close enough to Pattaya that, when you get that itch, it's merely a song tow ride away. Jomtien is quiet and plenty of expats live here.  Best of luck!

Franck60 - I totally agree with quandow, try a few weeks in Jomtien, its very different from Pattaya. I have lived in Jomtien for about 2 years after tried Chiang Mai and Vietnam aJomtien is so much better. You are most welcome to pm me if you want some info about rentals, Immigration etc. etc.

Don't take anyone's advice on where to live. If you wanted Pattaya, you'd've already been there by now. For many of us that's the last place we'd live in Thailand. Look around. Immigration requirements are the same for all of them. Good luck...
