Wall Fan Install Wiring

Featured Replies

When installing a wall fan that is turned on/off via pull strings is it safe to cut the plug off the power cord and connect directly to a live cable or connect directly to a switch?

It just seems it would look better.

Yep not a problem

I plan to do one in my kitchen to the power point (but need to check for space in the back of socket )

Good evening,
At home, wall fan, with plug.
That of the ceiling, with cable and switch with the speeds.
On the ceiling, difficult cleaning. :hit-the-fan:

yes of course you can do that  but i would recommend putting an isolater switch of the correct  voltage/power rating in the circuit to power down the supply and fan

Thanks for all of the replies. The wall fan is just a cheap 18" Hatari for the kitchen and will not be used much.

Low ceiling so wiring is easy to get to.

So tomorrow the plug will come off and the fan installed.

Well actually Hatari are good, all my fans are

I have 4 pedastool

One pull string into a socket outside under cover (because I wanted to run an extension outlet )

Also swapped the front verendah light out for an isolating fan

My next one will be the kitchen as mentioned prior

I would not hook the fan directly to the house wiring, feed it via a light switch (you need to isolate for service), or conceal a plug / socket combination in the ceiling space.

Never needed to service a fan (only clean it )

There's also a fuse box in the house

Would it be "to code" in your home country? If not, why would you do it here?

There's nothing inherently hazardous in installing like that. Until the fan fails and catches fire (they do), flip the switch or pull the plug and all's well.

If I was worried about home country specs I would be rewiring the whole house

As TIT I can do things that my origin Nanny country wouldn't allow me to do

Seems like a good idea to me to have a switch to turn off a smoking fan.

I have decided to install using the plug/socket combination and concealed it in the ceiling where it is easy to get to.

I wasn't concerned of fires but I knew one day the fan would need to be repaired or replaced and having a plug/socket combo would make it easy. Concealing it in the ceiling was also aesthetically.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.
