BANGKOK, 25 April 2018 (NNT) – A committee in charge of the police reform is planning to propose changes in the structure of the police force in a new version of the Royal Thai Police Act.

The chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, Mr. Meechai Ruchuphan, said on Tuesday that the latest meeting of the committee in charge of the new draft Royal Thai Police Act on Monday focused on the overload of responsibilities of the police, which could be caused by such missions as the registration work and the traffic control that are not relevant to the crime suppression mission.

He added that the committee is considering the restructuring of the police to achieve a more streamlined operation while making sure that any changes will not disrupt anything.

Mr. Meechai stressed that the upcoming changes will not see the transfer of the investigative efforts from the police as such operations are essential to be carried out along the crime suppression.

He went on to say that the committee is expected to spend the next few months to complete a draft amendment for the government to review before it is submitted to the National Legislative Assembly for deliberation.

Meanwhile, Secretary-General of the Council of State Distat Hotrakitya said that the Council of State believes that the Royal Thai Police should still be responsible for the investigative tasks due to their expertise while any changes of the law will take into consideration suggestions and opinions from other committees.

I think the first major reform, will be tripling of the number of places available in the "inactive post" department ! :giggle:

How about sack the whole lot and start again?

Once again the "reformers" direct their attention to "form before function".

To Serve and Protect Pfffff!

It's too bad that Google (excpet Thai google) has been blocked for Thai ministries(kidding).  Creating and implementing  functional policy and law, might actually make sense, and not be pulled from a hat...

I think we can safely assume that, if the RTP is to become more streamlined, we won't see them at all. At least, as things stand, we do see the odd officer making sure he doesn't disrupt anything.

This committee doesn't have the slightest clue as to where it should be aiming or what needs to be changing. Their number one priority, as always, will be to cause as little offense or loss of face as possible . . . well, that wouldn't be Thai, would it?

There have already been more committees like this than there are bamboo trees in the real jungle.

The mystery of why police don't engage in law enforcement has been revealed - the poor guys are overloaded with irrelevant tasks!

The POLICE should be made to go on internationally veiwed TV, FB, etc and apologize to the world for using he English word "POLICE" that reprsents law and order. Unfortunately the so called police here are NOT Police at all in any sense of the word.. an international apology should be made asap and the word police stripped from the entire force ,uniforms, cars etc.

Unsuspecting tourists often mistake police for being protecors of the people here but unfortunately they ARE the criminals. I think a class action lawsuit of some sort pushing for defemation charges for using this word would be a blessing.

Then change the word police to "wana be tight pant lazy mafia try hards".

Dads army is to be streamlined, Captain Mannering is to get a new office and Godfried gets his own toilette.

what they need to do is get rid of those pathetic trucks they use and get decent police cars so they can go out on the roads and pull over all those breaking the law, really have to wonder at what idiots decided they dont need to be on the road and to give them the trucks, they must be getting a big fat bonus from the suppliers

Not to mention jobs on the side.

Oh, they do. You can tell that when the traffic is gridlocked, the traffic lights are changing quicker than those in a disco, and chaos is in the ascendance.

"Police reform.." Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Streamlining maybe but reform should be about proper training, responsibility, accountability and NO CORRUPTION, for starters!

But I guess I can (and do) dream.

As they look after their own interests and try to avoid real criticism, I'd suggest a better motto might be:

To Self-serve and Deflect.
