93 foreigners rounded up in nationwide crackdowns

I understand the part about working illegally, overstay and more, but how do these guys enter the country illegally? Do they cross the borders outside checkpoints? And where is this common?

If so, it seems like a route that many colored are using, and should be easy to shut down.

That could effect Thailands reputation!

Good job done by The Royal Thai tourist police, they do do a good job, but let's face it, what reputation is he referring to.

Seems to me the schools ought to be shut down for hiring illegal/unqualified teachers. Don't the schools have the responsibility to hire legally resident, qualified teachers and get them the proper work permits? If not, why not? Certainly seems the employer ought to be responsible for ensuring the employee is here legally. The teachers should be investigated and given a small fine for not reporting the school for its illegal practices. If the investigation of the teachers results in other charges; handle them accordingly. Oh, silly me, there I go again expecting rational action.

They do, and should be facing stiff penalties- 100k is possible.

However, I do not like illegal things, but here I have to remind you, that the Thai work permit is simply a nonsense. It is valid only to a certain place a and a certain occupation. If I teach in a school and have private students, that is not covered by the work permit. Even if it is in the same town or street.  In most of the cases working in a summer camp is illegal. No school can manage the teachers work permit for short a period like this.

I am not speaking about the big, international schools, but my school has been managing my and my colleagues' visa since last October and they really work on the case. Whose fault is this? Definitely, teachers cannot blame for it.

That's a very good point.  The work permit could not be arranged.  Easy pickings I guess.

So, you know that having private students or working summer camp is illegal without a specific work permit. Why would you do it then?  I doubt that no school can manage the work permits; most simply may not want to bother. So, why do they do it then? I suggest the offending schools need to be shut down and the offending teachers deported.

Why did they raid schools if they were looking for criminals posing as tourists so they could run call center scams?

Are there a lot of tourists here teaching, or a lot of criminals on ED visas?

What's the deal with the cops using the carpark of the Monthian Hotel at 2am to have this big extravaganza "we got'em" photo op ?

Maybe the hotel puts on a really beaut buffet brekky ?

Bet the hotel guests were intrigued (pissed off)

Don't the cops have a big carpark of their own somewhere ?

No, I doubt it... not these days.

But this time of year most teaching will be summer camps.  As explained earlier, there simply would not be enough time to arrange a work permit, even for a qualified teacher who is working legally elsewhere.

So easy pickings and big fines for the schools.

they seem too. a lot of africans working as english teachers in the sticks. really dodgy but i guess they only have to pay them 25k and that's pretty much impossible to live on so they must be up to something else

25k is hardly impossible, Thai teachers start on 15K, it takes them 5 years to reach 25K and they have to pay taxes which a foreign illegally employed teacher will not be paying, and also no doubt their student loan.  You may also consider the many Thai families who live off a single earner on minimum wage, if 25K is impossible for a single person, how do you think people feed a family on 7000?  The average wage in Thailand is 14K, there's so many people out there dreaming of earning 25K, you should get out more, where do you live?

How are they netting these "teachers" at 2:00 am?

Seems like a weird time.

Are they just casting a wide net, checking everyone they come acrss and hoping for illegals small fry?

That must really piss off genuine tourists/residents/work permit holders/teachers?

I guess the schools are doing summer camps and can't find normal teachers, but I just don't find the reports credible.  Quite honestly, I can't see any normal school letting illegal, non-native speakers anywhere near the kids.  Something a bit odd here!

You obviously know noting about the Thai education system. I've worked in it for 25 years and they really don't care about the quality of teachers. It's all about money!!! They are even hiring African teachers now, as they are cheaper. 25 or even 15 years ago, they NEVER hired black teachers. Native English speaking teachers are working online these days as they can earn twice to 5 times more what a Thai school will give them. Summer camps offer something ridiculous like 3000 baht a day, well less to any old foreigner. Non native speakers are really making things worse for kids. One of my kids was taught by Filipinos and Africans, who I couldn't understand and the degrees there are suspect.

20 years ago, I worked in a school where Taksin's daughter went. One of the teachers there left school at 15 and was the son a famous London gangster. Ah, the stories I could tell.....

I bet they would be good stories as well.  As someone with kids in school here, I'd be interested in getting your take (on another thread) on international schools here.  I know it's been done by others, but I'm not sure if they had an insiders view like you have.

Oh my God, talk about missing the point.  I am not saying you should get out more and become poor, I am saying you should get out more so that you are at least aware of the economy of the country you live in and the situation the majority of the populous are in.

Not from another Forum, but I can't find a post from Thaiwrath on this thread prior to your comment, which was Post No#8! So perhaps you are "the guy from another Forum?"

25k is pretty much impossible to live on IF you stay at the Dusit,,  with a 6k rent and 19k  left,    where is the problem   ???I must be up to something else   ha ha ha-----600 a day is fantastic------unless you are a drinker and lazy to cook, and smoke, and have a Thai family to keep.
