I want to get rid of my CAT internet connection - What do you think to this idea?

One of my thoughts when looking at the AIS 6Mbps 12 month pre paid package  priced at 3,500 Baht,  was what are the terms and conditions , including any FUP / throttling . As with many internet packages there may be a FUP , but finding the exact terms and conditions related to the AIS 6Mbps 12 month plan has not been fruitful  . So I'm assuming that this particular AIS package may have some restrictions ( FUP / Throttling / Hotspot use ) It seems that the only way to confirm the actual terms and conditions related to this AIS 6Mbps 12 month plan , would be asking at an official AIS shop / office .

Well I managed to find some terms & conditions  relating to the AIS  6Mbps 12 month pre paid package , but they look a bit vague

I'm still wondering about any FUP / throttling / hotspot problems ?

Why not just stick with CAT? They offer 1, 4, 6 and 8Mbps connections, for less than AIS.

Do they? Perhaps you can post the details.

Really?

Your meagre 60 to 70 GB monthly usage will barely register.

6 Mbps equals around 2.7 GB per hour. You claim to use to 2 to 3 GB per day.

Stop this nonsense.  Doubling your usage will not make a difference. Even tripling it.

If you was constantly downloading at max speed twenty four hours a day, they might consider your usage unusual.

So please...stop worrying.

His post did make me wonder if I had missed some thing .

Well just a quick update , while out shopping in the city I decided to call into the main large AIS office and enquirer about the AIS 6Mbps six month and one year duration packages .

1. Mao Mao Unlimited 6Mbps unlimited package ( six months or one year duration ) . The sales girl confirmed in reasonable English that both these options had no FUP throttling or capping , when I asked if I could use these AIS packages with the hot spot on my mobile phone , or Wireless router ( with SIM card slot ) so I could then connect my Android tablet or other computers to the hot spot / router  Wifi signal , the AIS sales girl said that with these packages it was forbidden to use any hot spot device . So I asked what would happen to my pre paid AIS package should I use a hot spot device , the girl said that my pre paid AIS account would be terminated as its contrary to the packages terms and conditions. So it seems that it was a good job that I actually went into the AIS office and found out about the hot spot issue:thumbsup:

No where on the AIS web site relating to these two packages can I see any reference of Hot Spot restrictions .:whistling:

That's because there aren't any such restrictions.  You just make trouble for yourself and for everyone else.

Your dear old mum was right....what's worse you haven't changed.

You've already been told that it's not an issue, but you keep on and on until your fears are realised.

Many data packages (not in Thailand) do have hotspot restrictions, but how do they tell? After all the phone still looks like a phone to the network, or does it?

As soon as the AIS sales girl said about the hot spot restrictions , that question of how does the AIS SIM card know that its being used in a hot spot device , came into my mind . I have a feeling its some thing to do with the amount of total GB that are being used up , even though with these two packages the sales girl confirmed that there was no FUP . I did ask the AIS sales girl when hearing that there was a hot spot restriction , so if I just use the AIS SIM card in my Android tablet which has a SIM card slot , but do not use the Android tablets hot spot option , then I can continually download 24 hours a day for the complete duration of the SIM card package life ( 6 or 12 months ) an unlimited amount of GB's , the sales girl said yes I can do that without the SIM card being terminated as I would not be breaking  any terms and conditions relating to hot spot use , which to me seems to be crazy , so I cannot use a hot spot because that option may ( I'm not sure ) allow the SIM card owner to share the SIM card usage over wifi and then increase the GB usage to an unacceptable level , but I can use up as much GB amount as I want if I only put the AIS SIM card in my Android tables . May be Ive got some thing wrong ?

The AIS sales girl confirmed that there was a hot spot restriction , I can only go on what I was told , the restriction on using a hot spot device or as in my case a wireless router with a SIM card slot , defeats the whole idea of using this particular AIS package . I have been told by the AIS sales girl in the main AIS office that if I buy the AIS SIM card and use it in a hot spot device , the SIM card will be terminated , what more can I say . I would love to see where it officially says on the AIS web site or any other printed matter that there are no hot spot restrictions relating to these AIS packages ?

Ive just looked at the CAT web site and their 1 or 4 Mbps unlimited package for 6 / 12 months and the terms and conditions read as follows ( google translated )

The package For personal use only. Can not be used commercially. The use of large amounts of data that may affect other users, such as bit torrent or hotspot sharing, or the use of electronic devices that need to be connected. If the Company detects such use, the Company will automatically suspend the use of such information.

Note the words Hotspot sharing and will be automatically suspended :whistling:

I would contact AIS directly via email at [email protected] to ask specifically about Hotspot usage on those Mao Mao packages. Alternatively, you could try one for a day, week, month to see if it works for you. For a single shot of 34 baht plus the cost of a SIM (50 baht) you could test tethering for 24 hours (could be midnight to midnight?).

Fair usage terms tend to be broad, and subject to change, and may not detail all aspects of "usage" in your contract. Hence they can limit usage/volume etc. if they choose.

It seems like some of the unlimited volume/speed-capped Mao Mao plans do allow for Hotspot , based on information I could find on Thai social media. But it is still a  bit confusing, to me anyway. AIS staff participate on these forums in official capacities.

I'm not sure how carriers limit the Hotspot application, there are quite a few methods described on the interwebs including TTL, and some of which can be overcome. In the U.S. my plan does not currently support tethering (Hotspot) and it does not work, so my provider is able to sense usage and block it. They sent a text offering an add-on package when I attempted it.

I think you are indeed overthinking this.  You got great practical advise, yet want any technicality to prevent you from solving your problem.  Being in Thailand for this long, you should know that what a front-line rep tells you isn't always gospel (even the supervisor can be ill informed).  It could be an outright lie (too lazy to double-check), or often it is a guess or misinterpretation of what is actually possible.  maybe it is an old rule that is not applicable.

If you consider the contradiction.  How could they know you are using it as a hotspot?  The internet traffic itself is the same regardless of how you connect to the device.  In fact, don't those same shops sell USB sticks and hotspot devices?

In practice, they will likely throttle suspected bittorrent downloading and such.   Outside of that, you should have very little problems.   And

My by cat has several plans under 4g MaxSpeed

5af65d893df81_1507191357_my4GMaxSpeed2.thumb.jpg.f39e489e597874a1216c984b035cc521.jpg

In fact, they seem to have a promotion for 4G Max Speed

5af65d829a5ce_4gmaxspeed50promotion1525056454_MNP-30-5-61.jpg.1eb84309bf1a26e004357157e2988042.jpg

It's good because you get voice minutes + internet.    And it appears that the 4g portion is unlimited for their higher packages.

But in your case, you want a package where you just use a steady amount of data for a long time.  So maybe those 4M/6M/8Mbps capped speed unlimited data packages are better for you.   The banner at the top suggests they have 6M/8M but I dont see it.

--------------

Your grandfathered plan is outdated.  You can get at least 1.5 times as much for 2/3rds the price.  I have the 4G Max Speed 5GB/300min for 426 baht, prior to that I had My Smart Pack 6GB/250min for 426 baht.  The only reason I changed is they insisted My Smart was only 3g (did not include 4g)....even though normally they give you 4g automatically.

----------------

The suggestion to have 2 different ISPs (e.g. AIS and My) is also wise.  Sometimes one may be slow one day or a tower goes out after a power outage.  Btw, you can also look into True or Cat cabble internet.  Although Cat may also have some other landline internet (fiber, dsl, etc).   No one else in your area has landline internet, including internet shops?

No...I would bother doing any of that at all.

That is stupidly attracting attention to a problem that does not exist.

Something that is currently not covered by the T&C may now be reconsidered. That would be the height of stupidity.

Many people have been using those particular packages for months with no issues.

Now all of a sudden a particular nervous character pops up and even those he has been repeatedly assured that his usage is considered relatively low, insists on making a mountain out a molehill.

Leave it alone!

OP should just take the word of the sales girl and look for another solution, rather than possibly ruining everything for the rest of us.

I have to state that it is quite annoying when you try to help someone and they continually throw it back into your face.

You begin to wonder if it was wise to have bothered to help that person in the first place.

All you are doing it attraction attention to yourself and to everyone else.

There has never been a restriction on USB 'aircards' usage. A MiFi is just an aircard, but with the ability to transceive wirelessly.

The key phrase even in the CAT blurb is "The use of large amounts of data that may affect other users".

Don't make a drama that may affect others negatively. If you have convinced yourself there is a restriction, then accept it and leave the thing alone. Find another solution.....or just buy a basic SIM, add the package and shut up about it.....please.

You can easily tell what device is being used on a network.

As to using your phone's HotSpot connection also possible, but it is not an issue.

Had you read of even a single person's account being suspended on this forum?

I can assure you there are people using these packages as their main connection without issue.

Maybe ThaiLife imagines that he is the first and asking questions on all of our behalf, conveniently forgetting that others have been using these packages for months.

He's been told, but keeps going on and on.
