Ahhh...the differing views on The Last Ship. tongue.png

I enjoyed episode 1 myself and i think the series shows some promise, but we will see where the script takes us. Hopefully not down a well worn path.

I am normally first to rail against the impossibly beautiful survivors in post apocalyptic situations but for this show I have forgiven for now. tongue.png

Few more episodes and we'll see where we are

Hi Bookman

God i just couldnt watch another minute of the show ,when that guy on the bridge said "permission to salute the captain" i thaught i would be sick over the tv ,i was suprised they didnt all form a circle and praise the lord .in fact i may just watch another episode to see if it can get any worse ,by the way ,loved it when that attractive scientist was dragged back from her Expidition and her makeup was perfect .biggrin.png

Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger

Having read several books on James Bulger, I'm really looking forward to this one.

IMDB: Number 2 on America's Most Wanted list after Osama Bin Laden, James 'Whitey' Bulger terrorized the city of Boston for years without ever being charged with so much as a misdemeanor. Bulger was a monster, murdering over a dozen known victims, but did the FBI and local law enforcement give his reign of terror over South Boston a free pass?

Is that available now?

I couldn't find it mate, but then again I'm not too good at finding things.

On IMDB it said the release date was 18 Jan 2014 but it's listed as opening soonblink.png

Dont know if anyone has said this yet but Happy Valley , well worth a look ,very good

Yep, the reviews are great.

Have episode 1 ready to go.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00JRXHEAA/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0AECW3HP073HN4TTQQGW&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294

I downloaded all 6 episodes, but honestly struggled to get through the first one. Way too much "talking heads" dialogue, though some interesting story lines going. Maybe I was in the wrong mood. I'll try to finish it later and see if I like it an better.

I finished this series last night.

I have to say I really enjoyed it. But then again I'm quite partial

to gritty English crime shows. Maybe it went on for 1 episode too

long but all in all I found it really enjoyable.

I have to say honestly, I tried again, and couldn't get through the droning run-on dialogue in the first episode so deleted all of them. As mentioned above, it's good we don't all have the same tastes.

Ahhh...the differing views on The Last Ship. tongue.png

It reminds me a little of "Last Resort" a recent show that I was fond of that only lasted one season. The captain of a nuclear sub was given the task of launching nuclear warheads on Pakistan because, supposedly, the US had been fired upon by Pakistan. The Captain checks to see what is happening on the US homeland. From his TV on board he sees everything is normal, so he refuses to launch his warheads and has to go on the run from the US government with the whole ship.

It wasn't great, but I was disappointed when it was canceled.

Murder in the First: 3 episodes in, so far so good.

The Night Shift: If you haven't taken my advice and started watching this, then you need to take a hard look at yourself! tongue.png

Movies that have popped up this week that are definitely worth a watch Calvary: a really good cast for this film, not sure about the "comedy" genre, though there appear to be plenty of one liners from Gleeson's character. But definitely lining it up via the usual sources.

Puncture Wounds aka A Certain Justice: Whatever it's called, it's got Dolph Lundgren playing a redneck, so that should be hilarious in itself, Vinnie Jones playing a typical Vinnie Jones role as well. Not as confident as I am about Calvary, but it looks like a laugh (for all the wrong reasons tongue.png)

Also watched The Last Ship, open mind at the moment, nothing very much to get excited about.

True blood is back for new season, but getting crazier it seems, at least we saw Sookies boobs again.Under the Dome due to start soon again

How are people getting on with The100 out of interest?

Likewise. Last Resort started well and looked like it had a massive budget. Good concept but it just didn't carry it off. Maybe the remote island setting was the problem? Also, the casting straight out of a glamour magazine tongue.png. Makes the characters in The Last Ship look downright ugly

I would probably agree with the Critic's Choice awards, but I hate to admit that 24 is the show that I download and watch the quickest these days.

Most of the shows recomended on here are really good(even the ones i recomend) but i have tried to like 24 but just find it boreing ,sorry boys.

24 boring? I'm guessing that you are a female.

OMG, the episode this week was more fun than any action feature film I've seen recently. thumbsup.gif

Another new one- Tyrant. Synopsis: Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family — Barry, Molly and their kids — drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle East nation.Tyrant is from Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright. It is created by Raff, developed by Gordon and Wright and to be directed by David Yates. The Fox 21-produced project, which will film the pilot in Morocco, has a big commitment at FX and is expected to go to series.

Just watched the pilot - looks good!

Great find on "Tyrant" looks excellent thumbsup.gif

Jack Bauer REALLY impressed me when he threw out the garbage. laugh.png

Interesting how they're being so PC careful about how they portray Islamic Arabs in this new series. The terrorist is an Anglo-saxon British subject woman who together with her British son is avenging the death of her dead Arab husband (religious affiliation unknown), by targeting British citizens in London with hijacked American drones with a condition that the US President turn himself into her for justice. cheesy.gif

Damn, it must be fun to come up with this stuff. However, Homeland doesn't pull any such punches, and I love it and looking forward to Tyrant too.

**Actually, in rethinking these decisions may not have been driven by any political correctness, but simple economics. The studio wants to sell this into global syndication and it probably sells better like this.

Random thoughts....

What makes British, and now quite a few Australian, actors/actresses so damn GOOD?? They come to the US, play American parts, and are flawless. I'm thinking---Christian Bale, outstandingly great actor. Did you see him in "The Fighter", with Mark Wahlberg? He OWNS that movie! And then he did American Hustle, with that crazy hairpiece, and the big gut.

Now we've got this new young Australian guy, Aden Young, playing to absolute authentic perfection the role of Daniel Holden, a young man who gets released from prison after 20 years (Death Row in goddam Georgia!). You'd swear this was a documentary, the acting and writing is so good. And on the same show, another Aussie, Adelaide Clemens, as his young, innocent, Protestant/Fundamentalist sister in law. You won't believe she's not from Georgia. Written and produced by Ray McKinnon, who played the poor whacked out preacher in the all-time fantastic series Deadwood.

Speaking of Deadwood, who can forget Ian McShane as Bad to the Bone Al Swearingen! Another Brit. Well, he's called a "Limey" in the show, but he came to America as a small boy. I miss that show. might have to watch it all again.

Then there was The Wire, with Dominick West as McNulty (a Brit), Aiden Gillen (Irish guy) as Tommy Carcetti, Mayor of Baltimore, and the great Idris Elba as Stringer Bell. I almost went catatonic when I heard Idris get interviewed on NPR, speaking in his natural British accent. It's almost a cliche to call the Wire the greatest show ever, but that's the fact. Idris is also great on his latest series, Luther.

When an American actor tries to play a Brit, I can't think of one instance of that working. The greatest travesty of all: Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes!!?? Get outta here! When you see Benedict Cumberbatch owning that part, with his flawless, perfect English diction, so suave, I'd be embarrassed to be Downey, a fine actor nonetheless. And then there's Jonny lee Miller, playing another version of Holmes, but as a Brit in new York. That show was starting to drag until they brought in Rhys Ifans (Welsh guy!) to play the part of Mycroft Holmes. And how about Doctor Watson, played by Martin Freeman, who then comes to America and takes total possession of his role as Lester Nygaard in Fargo. You can't believe he's not from Minnesota.

Now they're shooting a show that's an American version of the great UK show Broadchurch, and supposedly it will star David Tennant, an American version of his flawless UK part. That may be a step too far, we'll see.

^ Surely you jest. Who can forget the flawless cockney accent by Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins? That may have been slightly bettered by the Afrikaner South African accent by Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamonds....Nah, Van Dyke remains the American king of accents. smile.png

Two Pet Peeves:

1.) Why are there so many show that have actors smoking cigarettes, who clearly DO NOT SMOKE? They just blow into the cigarette, or the shot gets jiggled so you see them blowing out smoke? Are tobacco companies somehow working behind the scenes?

2.) Why are there so many TV shows and movies in which, when it comes time for the characters to "make love", they start tearing each others clothes off, and humping on top of the washing machine or up against a wall. Is this the standard way younger people "mate" these days? "The Boss" was a great political TV show, with Kelsey Grammer as the stone cold mayor of Chicago. The show was ruined by these animalistic sexual encounters between minor characters in the show. Unnecessary!

The accent I find annoying is the sort of clipped American accent that Elizabeth McGovern has naturally acquired from living in England many years. I do understand it because living in London myself for some years, I did find myself adopting some British English accent touches. She is good though anyway in the great Downton Abbey. On the other hand, there are some great British (& Scottish- thought I'd add this before someone pedantic came along) actors who never could get an American accent, I'm thinking Michael Caine, Sean Connery, etc..

My absolute favorite Peter Sellers movie of all time, Being There, a brilliant and funny film based on the also brilliant Jerzy Kosinski novella, featured a pretty crappy American accent by Sellers, but he was fantastic in the film anyway.

That is one of my pet peeves too. If people really go at it that way, I must be real wimp. I don't like porno where the women act like carnivorous animals either. I prefer woman a lot more feminine and a lot less aggressive than that.
