BANGKOK, 7th May 2018 (NNT) – According to a survey by Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch), household expenses increased in April due mainly to the annual Songkran Festival.

KResearch says the Household Economic Condition Index slipped to 45.3 in May from 45.6 the previous month, attributing the fall to higher spending (excluding debt) during the Thai New Year celebrations and concern towards the rising cost of living.

The survey went on to suggest that households’ perception of income and employment has stayed positive, thanks to the new minimum wages ranging between 308 and 303 baht per day across provinces as well as the rising prices of agricultural products.

In the meantime, the 3-month Expected Household Economic Condition Index increased from 46.3 in March to 46.9 in April as households have anticipated lower expenses in the next few months.

Perception doesn't pay for groceries, commuting and healthcare.

Surely a 0.2% per annum average increase in minimum wages vs 0.5-1.1% per annum increase in cost of living isn't a positive factor for any economic performance.
