A meeting has been held at the Phuket Tourism and Sports Office this week led by Tourist Police commander Col Tongchai Wilaiprom together with the Director of the Phuket Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, Sirawee Waloh. Joining them were local Phuket tour operators.

Col Tongchai says “In recent years many tourists have died and been injured in marine and road accidents. These incidents have greatly affected confidence in the safety for tourists when they are travelling in Phuket.

How about introducing safety standards...………………………..and enforcing them

Oh yeah that would cost money

GPS monitors and onboard camera videoing tour bus and van drivers actions behind the wheel?  Can't have that.  It would slow them down!!!  :shock1:

Perhaps talking to law enforcement bodies might be a better idea.... whilst not suggesting commercial operations are blameless, I see this as the authorities trying to dodge any responsibility on their part

Thongchai is a member of a law enforcement body! In fact the Tourist Police Deputy Commissioner seems to be involved in every reported arrest nationwide these days!

No, they need to read the pages of Thaivisa, which are full of expert advice in safety and appropriate law enforcement (not a joke!!!)

As usual I note that most of the comments above are by people who do not live in Phuket and are not affected by the issues and any attempt to try and raise awareness.

Progress eh- who needs it? :post-4641-1156694572:

Until the Thai approach to administrating their tourism industry of getting the most money coming in, for the least money going out, nothing will change.

Safety standards, enforcement, training, inspections, accreditation etc etc all cost money.

Their attitude here is to rake the money in, and not care about "collateral damage" along the way.
