GAZA-ISRAEL BORDER (Reuters) - Palestinians buried the dead on Tuesday from the bloodiest day in Gaza in years, after Israeli forces killed 60 Palestinians near the Gaza-Israel border during demonstrations against the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.

Israeli forces shot dead two more Palestinians on Tuesday, although protests were quieter than the previous day. It appeared that many protesters had gone to mourning tents rather than back to the scene of Monday's bloodshed. Mourners marched through the strip, waving Palestinian flags and calling for revenge.

"With souls and blood we redeem you martyrs," they shouted.

Hundreds marched in the funeral of eight-month-old Leila al-Ghandour, whose body was wrapped in a Palestinian flag.

"Let her stay with me, it is too early for her to go," her mother cried, pressing the baby's body to her chest. The family said she died of inhaling tear gas.

At Gaza's hospitals, families crowded the halls and spilled out of rooms as patients awaited treatment. Bassem Ibrahim, who said he was shot in the leg by Israeli troops, said at one stage he had feared losing the limb because of the delays.

"There are not many doctors. They are unable to see everyone, with all the injuries," said Ibrahim, 23. "The number was unbelievable and they did not have time."

On the Israeli side of the border, Israeli sharpshooters took up positions to stop any attempted breach of the fence should demonstrations break out again. Tanks were also deployed.

But if the violence tapered off, it still had a forceful impact internationally, with countries criticising both the Israeli use of deadly force and the U.S. decision to open its new embassy at a ceremony attended by President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Turkey expelled Israel's ambassador, and Israel expelled the Turkish consul-general in Jerusalem. President Tayyip Erdogan exchanged heated words on Twitter with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Palestinians summoned home their representative in Washington, citing the embassy decision.

Netanyahu blamed Hamas for provoking the violence. "They’re pushing civilians – women, children – into the line of fire with a view of getting casualties. We try to minimize casualties. They're trying to incur casualties in order to put pressure on Israel, which is horrible," Netanyahu told CBS News.

The United States echoed that charge, with State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert saying the United States regretted all loss of life but blaming "the misery that is faced by people in Gaza" on Hamas. She said Hamas used the U.S. embassy move "as an excuse to rile people up and to encourage violence."

"We have seen how Hamas continues to incite violence," she told a briefing. "The activities that are taking place there ... would certainly stop if violent protests were to stop."

For six weeks, Palestinians have been holding Gaza border demonstrations demanding access to family land or homes lost to Israel when it was founded in the 1948 Middle East war. Israel rejects that demand, fearing it would deprive the state of its Jewish majority.

Palestinian medical officials say 107 Gazans have now been killed since the start of the protests and nearly 11,000 people wounded, about 3,500 of them by live fire. Israeli officials dispute those numbers. No Israeli casualties have been reported.

Palestinian leaders have called Monday's events a massacre, and the Israeli tactic of using live fire against the protesters has drawn worldwide concern and condemnation.

The United Nations Security Council met to discuss the situation.

Israel has said it is acting in self-defence to protect its borders and communities. Its main ally, the United States, has backed that stance. Hamas, which rules Gaza and opposes Israel's existence, denies instigating violence.

The Israeli military said at least 24 of those killed on Monday were "terrorists with documented terror background" and most of them were active operatives of Hamas.

The Islamic Jihad militant group posted portraits of three uniformed members whom it said were killed when they took part as non-combatants in the protests, and the Hamas-led interior ministry posted pictures of 10 of its security men killed in the protests whom it said were unarmed and monitoring the crowds.

May 15 is traditionally the day Palestinians mark the "Nakba", or Catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands fled or were driven from their homes in violence culminating in war between the newly created Jewish state and its Arab neighbours in 1948.

More than 2 million people are crammed into the Gaza Strip, more than two-thirds of them refugees. Citing security concerns, Israel and Egypt maintain tight curbs on the enclave, deepening economic hardship and raising humanitarian concerns.

A senior Israeli commander said that of the 60 Gazans killed on Monday, 14 were carrying out attacks and 14 others were militants.

He also said Palestinians protesters were using hundreds of pipe bombs, grenades and fire-bombs. Militants had opened fire on Israeli troops and tried to set off explosives by the fence.

Many casualties were caused by Palestinians carrying devices that went off prematurely," he said.

In Geneva, the U.N. human rights office condemned what it called the "appalling deadly violence" by Israeli forces.

U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said Israel had a right to defend its borders according to international law, but lethal force must only be used a last resort, and was not justified by Palestinians approaching the Gaza fence.

The U.N. rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Michael Lynk, said Israel's use of force may amount to a war crime.

YOUNG VICTIM

Many shops in East Jerusalem were shut throughout the day following a call by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for a general strike across the Palestinian Territories. A 70-second siren was sounded in the occupied West Bank in commemoration of the Nakba.

Most Gaza protesters stay around tent camps but groups have ventured closer to the border fence, rolling burning tyres and throwing stones. Some have flown kites carrying containers of petrol that spread fires on the Israeli side.

On Tuesday the number of protesters gathered at the frontier was estimated by the Israeli army at 4,000, well down on Monday.

Monday's protests were fuelled by the opening ceremony for the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem following its relocation from Tel Aviv. The move fulfilled a pledge by U.S. President Donald Trump, who in December recognised the city as Israel's capital.

Palestinians envision East Jerusalem as the capital of a state they hope to establish in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Israel regards all of Jerusalem, including the eastern sector it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and which it later annexed, as its "eternal and indivisible capital".

Most countries say the status of Jerusalem - a sacred city to Jews, Muslims and Christians - should be determined in a final peace settlement and that moving their embassies now would prejudge any such deal.

Netanyahu on Monday praised Trump but Palestinians have said the United States can no longer serve as an honest broker in any peace process. Talks aimed at finding a two-state solution to the conflict have been frozen since 2014.

Trump said on Monday he remained committed to peace between Israel and the Palestinians. His administration says it has nearly completed a new Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.

Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the Gaza violence. Hamas denied instigating it but the White House backed Netanyahu, saying Hamas "intentionally and cynically" provoked this response.

The United States on Monday blocked a Kuwait-drafted U.N. Security Council statement that would have expressed "outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians" and called for an independent investigation, U.N. diplomats said.

In the British parliament, junior foreign office minister Alistair Burt said the United States needed to show more understanding about the causes of Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Hamas' role in the violence must be investigated, he added.

what's going on in Gaza and Israel is far, far beyond the media's propaganda and the simplicity that Israel is the brutal, violent, psychotic villain who shoot at peaceful unarmed civilians, and Hamas is the poor under-dog righteous one,

on Monday afternoon, Hamas, in 1 hour, pulled every rioting person from out there,

why? because Egypt gave them an ultimatum to do so, also Israel agreed to open the Erez crossing back to normal and the the threats that now Hamas leadership are a legitimate pinpoint targets if they will not stop this madness, and all that time, Iran and Turkey are meddling in the background each for his own agenda...

Actually many candidates who became POTUS had the moving of the US Embassy to Jerusalem as a pre-election pledge.

Trump is the only one who actually delivered on it.

I doubt your speculation as to why he delivered is the only or main reason.

Sorry , but to me that looks like a cold blooded heartless killing by well prepared snipers etc . That can be called a crime against humanity .

They have been well prepared for the party .

Yes , Hamas sent the palestinians to die , because they want palestininan martyrs .  But the brutal killers have been the Israelis . Why did they not use rubber bullets instead of live ammunition , like a civilized country would have done ?

Once again they showed to the world how ugly and horrible people can become ...

There will never be peace over there ... they , the Israelis , seem not to want this anyway ...

Imagine...

Malaysia is turned to a fanatic muslim state. For 25 years long, many terrorist attacts into the South Thai provinces. Thai government responded by building a high and armed fence at the Thai Malaysian border. Ever 15th of May big riots at that fence, so Thai military there to prevent any invasion.

This year , again: at 5 places even tent-camps are set up in Muslim-Malaysia: tens for the press, food shops etc... and.. a 40.000 attack the border.

What YOU think the Thai militaty will do, knowing that, when this breaks throug, many Thai might be attacked by knifes and for sure many Thais will die.

I think, the Thai prime minister will NOT send snipers, but big machine guns, and fire.. NOT when they crossed the fence, and are 2-300 mtrs away from Thai villages, but.. when these rioters are still on the other side.

Why the Gazans do not protest at the Egyptian side a as also there... the Egyptions do not want to have these terrorists in.

could you not meet half way s.png

OK , in this case the Malaysians would only be armed with stones and burning tires as well ...?

I seriously doubt that anyone wanted to " break through " this border , fighting against heavily armed professional killers , without being adequately equipped ?

That would be suicidal , and they knew it .

That was a protest and not a tempted invasion ...

"identified the palestinians" Not so difficult: everyone on the other side of the fence. Even Egyptians donot want to be in Hamas controlled terrorist country.

"rubber bullets instead of live ammunition "  Nice to stop a few idiots, but not a 10,000. In Hamburg - G20 summit - they know the results, and there, no histeric killers of Germans walking around, but only rioters against the establishment.

Several Israëli governments already said: there can be a peace in 5 minutes: When the Palestinians accept Israel as a state, and will live peacefully with us under mutual agreed safe borders. The very unsafe military borders of 1967... no Israëli will accept seen over a century hostilities from the Arabs.

Do not forget: 700.000 jews had to leave the Arab world, leaving behand all they had. They hoped for the same population exchange as after the Greek-Turkish war (1923,

), the many exchanges in Eastern Europe, and after the split of India and Pakistan. Pity: no Muslim accepts any retreat from the Umma... see their maps in which Andaluz ( Spain) should be muslim again..

Look the heavy fortified and impregnable border between Belgium and Netherlands, signed for the tourists on the floor at a restaurant, as on other places... you even donot see that... see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baarle-Hertog. Not one Belgium or Dutch who wants to "rob" the other from its land, despite a...a ricuculous situation..  Good for foreign tourists...

Look at other information sources, not only Palestinian, and you will see the difference.

When there was a kind of Martin Luther King march... no shot would be fired.

Remind: from 1967 - around 1990  there was nearly a free movement of people, and merchandise... I walked in 1984 over that border with MAYBE see one single guard... see

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockade_of_the_Gaza_Strip  "Since June 1989, Israel has formally restricted the movement of Palestinians, imposing a magnetic-card system whereby only those with such a card were allowed to leave the Strip"

I helped to find , especially in building construction, to replace the then refused Palestinian workers. see https://www.jpost.com/Metro/Tel-Avivs-Filipino-shuk-490509  and https://migration.ucdavis.edu/mn/more.php?id=1299_0_5_0

Yes , before everything was better , but that is long gone ...

Religion ? If there is a god , he made all the universe , right ? Or do you think there is a special god only for special people ? 555

If everything in universe was created by god , ( and that is too much to even imagine ...) , do you think your prayers will be listened to ... ? Wake up .

The movement is preparing to encourage masses of Palestinians to climb the fence, be the cost as it may. The more desperate they are, the more they are likely to head for points of friction with Israel and clash with its troops. They will have nothing to lose.

The sanctions Abbas announced will enter into force immediately. They will result once again in the suspension of wages to PA employees in Gaza, greater hardship for the enclave’s barely functioning hospitals and severe power cuts. In a few weeks, as the mass march nears, Gaza is expected to be under a blackout. This will give the Palestinians additional cause to rise up and set out for the border fence, with Hamas cheering them on so it can shift responsibility for its central role in their plight and Abbas using their plight for his own political means.

Come on... 2018... the information age... read... so much on Internet...  not only one side... but several sides...

Are you paid by the Israeli government to make lame excuses  for all their violent actions against innocent civilians.  No, I am not paid by ANYone...
Gaza is a concentration camp hemmed in by Israel and limiting all their freedoms. Is MADE such a camp after many terrorist actions from there. In 1971, as student, I could walk just as free from Israel into the West bank and Gaza and back, together with israeli, Arab and other students as between the EU member states.  They are freedom fighters, just like the French resistance against the German occupation. They want to return to their homes from which they were forcibly evicted No, from which they were called by the Arab leaders to leave, to give theri armies free killing fields. Thoise arabs who stayyed, are now till in even teh Israëli parliament. How many Jews are in such a position in the Arab world ?  . The Israel government,  not content with that, wants to take more and more of their land. Might be not, see https://www.wordfromjerusalem.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/the-case-for-israel-appendix2.pdf. see also "palestinian land owning during british mandates"in google

Trump is a puppet of the Israeli government because they gave him billions of dollars ( I think it is more the opposite, as the little Jewish state simply doesnot have so much money. Second: Trump had enough of his own) for his election and he somehow has to appease them.

Calling others dunces is rather pathetic, childish remark. One only has to read your previous post to see your appalling hatred of the Palestinians. In one of your last posts. You accused Iran of shelling Israel. You obviously don't seem to realise that it was the Golan Heights where they shelled Israeli positions. Perhaps you don't know that the Golan Heights is in Syria, not in Israel. ( not since June 1967

This forum is supposed to be a friendly place and not one to spew hatred and propaganda.

Don't call me anti-Semitic because I am certainly not. I have many Jewish friends as well as Jewish business partners and they all deplore the present Israeli government as most of the world does.

Not so long ago I had an Israeli army friend come and stay with me. He was imprisoned for refusing to shoot Palestinian women and children , he told me a lot about what actually went on in Israel, so I'm well informed . So why don't you just give us all a break and keep your hatreds to yourself. I really pity you.

I agree with you, the way the present Israeli government handles the situation is NOT helping to solve this M.E. problem

Such a tragedy in any circumstances for a baby to lose their life. RIP. I do have two questions though:

1. Why would an 8 month old be anywhere near this dangerous situation? and

2. I am definitely no expert on this topic, but I do listen to both sides of the debate.  Yesterday I heard this was not a protest against the embassy move, but an annual protest by the Palestinians tied into the anniversary of the formation of Israel. Is that right or not?

And.. how many riots in Jordan, Lebanon, seen the low level of rights of Palestinians there ? ? Same ++ for the Gulf, and Saudi-Arabia. 700.000 jews fled the Arab world. So.. take up 700.000 Palestinians.

Bye the way: also later, many Arab nations kept a "low profile" in taking up ther Arab brothers from Iraq and Syria. Therefore over 1 million WALKED to Germany c.s.

The protests would have taken place regardless of Trump. This year marks the 70th anniversary of Israeli independence/Palestinian Nakba. Trump "just" threw some gasoline on the flames.

Since the protests started, there were several instances of the fence being breached. There were also failed attempts to do so, or to sabotage the fence. Speeches by Hamas leaders repeated the call to charge the fence and cross over, to "return" etc. The Israeli settlements and towns are situated very near to the fence.

As for "suicidal", the concept of martyrdom is rather common among Muslims in the ME, and perhaps even more so with regard to Palestinians. Said "martyrs" are respected, their families taken care of. And yes, Hamas is an Islamic movement.

Invasion it was not. But that doesn't mean there were no attempts to breach the fence, and no intention to do so. Luckily for both sides, there was no mass breaching - which would have led to far more casualties.

With regard to the infant's death - after the initial report by the Ministry of Health in Gaza, a local doctor told AP there was a a local doctor she may have died due to an preexisting condition, and that she was sick prior to events. As for taking an infant to a violent protest - beats me, both with regard to the family, and local authorities.

This bit is hidden somewhere midway this story:

http://www.news.com.au/world/middle-east/deadliest-day-in-four-years-may-trigger-outright-war-in-gaza-as-nations-hit-out-at-trump/news-story/352170746928ddc87d11722b5c38ef86

There are annual Palestinian protests marking several dates. As this year marks the 70th anniversary of Israeli independence/Palestinian Nakba, protests were planned as a 6 week efforts starting on Land Day and ending on Nakba Day. Trump's Embassy move was a perfect fit to make things worse, but there would have been protests regardless.
