I have a family of four going to visit me in June, they all have their own unblocked cell phones - and I want to purchase SIM cards for them to keep in contact and surf the net.  What kind of prices can I expect as I will be paying for them  -  I use 1,2,Call for mine @800 baht a month, unlimited use - what are the alternatives??   I have a permanent residence in JomTien that they will be staying in, so hav an address.   Are the deals in the Airport good, or a ripoff as with a lot of things inane airport.   Peace

depends also how much they will the internet.

I still use a DTAC Internet 2.5GB per Month for 299 (excl. VAT).

Which is much more than I need. Because at home I have internet.

Oh when the 2.5GB is empty, then the speed will be lowered to like 128KB, which is enough for a skype or line call.. but probably not for using it as YouTube video player...

I am using 1Mbit unlimited from dtac for 300thb. And pretty happy about coverage and stability.

But i don't need unlim as much as speed. I would like to have 3-5GB with full speed for the same or less price.

Quite an open-ended question, a bit like asking what they should eat during their visit...how long will they be visiting, how much data might they use, over what period, how many calls (minutes) might they make?

Personally, I would buy four (s) SIMs for them (maybe all from the same provider as on-net calls are often heavily discounted), at 50 baht each, then maybe add 100 - 500 baht on each SIM, then if I knew how much data they might use, subscribe to data plan.

There are literally a few hundred on-going promotions, with options ranging from daily, weekly, monthly, one-time, recurring, fixed volume/unlimited speed, fixed speed/unlimited volume.

This site can give you a feel for the current promotions: http://www.prosermthaisim.com/

Click on the provider to blow out the available promotions, use Google Translate.

For budgeting purposes, I might go with 400 baht/30 days, plus the 50 baht SIM, so 450 baht each for a month.

We can make a good guess about what is needed. What we can't know is the the quality of reception at your phone.

In my Pattaya apartment, AIS outperforms all. In Jomtien apartment DTAC blows all away.

As to you 800 baht package, it might not be truly unlimited at all, if it is just one of those packages that gives you 12 GB of fast data and then slows it down to 384kbps.

Outdated and expensive.

In general what would do for them is a unlimited data package that doesn't slow down after a certain amount of data is utilised.

To this end a 30 day 4 Mbps unlimited package with AIS is a good choice for 481.5 baht

On their arrival, turn off mobile data and leave only basic GSM on, top up 500 baht and then apply code *777*7155# and then the Dial button. One package confirmed,  turn mobile data back on.

Will stream YouTube to their heart's content, as well as allow for voice and video chatting.

49/50 baht basic SIM you can either pick up at the airport if you don't want to register them on your passport or if you don't mind, at the local AIS store(Central Festival lowest floor Beach Road entrance)

I would perhaps even suggest that such a package may be more suitable for you, if you are here for the long term.

Some thing like the 6 Month @ 6 Mbps unlimited package would set you back 321 baht per month(1926 baht per 6 months) instead of your current 800+ baht.

6 Mbps is more suitable for streaming Full HD material via your TV etc. 4 Mbps is more than ample for Smartphone usage.

Oh I see...you don't like people criticising you. Perhaps you shouldn't do it to others then...eh?

I just use this short code from True which enables "always on" connection for a month

Supposed to throttle speed after first 1gb of data but if it does it still plays youtube !

211 baht including VAT

*900*1801# and then "call"

Edited I believe there are similar short codes around 160 Baht for same deal but have this one saved to phone for immediate activaton upon arrival each trip

A caveat with that package is that it auto renews if you have enough credit..

It's 212.93 baht.

Not that it makes much difference, but just in case they only have 212 baht of credit, it won't work. ☺️

On the plus side you get unlimited usage of Truenove H Hotspots.

You can also use add-ons with that package; *900*8812#tel_icon.png gets you another 2 GB over 30 days for 105.93 bt, though remember to cancel it when you are done.

*900*8813#tel_icon.png 5 GB more over 30 days for 212.93

*900*8814#tel_icon.png 10 GB more over 30 day for 319.93

They also have an alternative option; Dial*900*8816#tel_icon.png gets you 1.5 GB over 30 day, slowing down to 128 kbps after you use up your allowance. But no free Hotspot usage.

Not sure young 'uns would be satisfied with 128 kbps. For sure they will get through the 1 GB in the first day. ☺️ Then disappointment will reign.

If you can actually find a short code that gives the deal you describe for 160 baht, do post it, as I'm sure many people who just need an 'always on' connection as opposed to a need for speed will use it.

Only what I have seen posted from True in the past. Maybe deleted now from availability who knows  ??

At 212 baht in my view its a bargain anyway as sure you'd agree

213 baht ?

It's a bargain only if it suits your usage.

If you can make use of their HotSpots(for instance, one being available at your accommodation) then you have 107 baht of value there already. 106 baht for the mobile data to keep you connected in between and it's a useful all-round plane for those that it suits.

But it won't suit everyone.

Well as I said earlier in the thread for reasons unknown that whilst its supposed to throttle the speed for rest of the 30 days after 1gb data use it clearly doesnt if its playing youtube !

Agree with you that on the surface its ideal for Line Messenger FB online radio etc etc and it wouldnt suit heavy use but its an always on connection at the end of the day and does what it says on the tin

Haven't used Truemove H for a long time and that particular package for an even longer time.

It will be good for you to run a speed test the next time you have used up your 1 GB of data.

I wouldn't like to recommend it on the basis that you say it runs YouTube after throttling, as someone else's mileage might vary.

If the speedtest indicates 128 kbps, but it still plays YouTube, then perhaps they aren't throttling YouTube or you are playing the lowest quality of video.

But who will be the next to test this?

Here’s some stuff you can do with 128kbps on a phone:

  • Browse the web with acceptable speed using opera mini (it will compress data on their servers and block ads, so that pages are a lot lighter to load)
  • Listen to music on Spotify (using normal quality, at 90kbps) and online radio (up to around 128kbps)
  • Read and send emails
  • Watch youtube videos (144p)
  • Download and watch youtube videos (may be better if you want higher quality, without lag, as long as you don’t mind waiting for them to download first)
  • VoIP calls (sound will be low quality but calls should work fine… not so much with videocalls though)
  • Chat with friends and send pictures (works a lot better with chat apps that automatically compress pictures)
  • Online gaming (Yes! You can actually play online on such a connection, if your ping is fast enough. Gaming requires good latency, but very little bandwidth)
  • File downloads of small size

Here’s how long you should expect files to take downloading:

1m40s ———— PDF document with 1.5MB

4m20s ———— MP3 file with 4MB

8m45s ———— 280p video with 5 minutes, 8 MB

50m15s ———— 720p video with 5 minutes, 46 MB

Calculate something else here: Download Time Calculator - calculate download time

Say you want to watch a movie at night, you could leave your phone downloading it all day and then it would be ready for you to watch at night… if that's not an HD movie of course. Or if it's a small one.

With this sort of connection, you are able to download around up to 1.25GB per day or up to 55 MB per hour. Keeping that in mind should help you manage it better.

Oh and if you're going to be downloading a lot with your phone, keep it plugged in. The speed may be slower but the battery goes away just as fast, regardless of data speed!

lol its a fiver in English money for a 24/7 connection for a month. Dont sweat the small stuff. If a user found that after 1gb it is indeed to slow then just bin it and get another plan. Youtube works fine thats all I can tell you on the beach the only place I would ever use it (and no I'm not connected to true hotspots)

Then you'd be throwing away a fiver and having to spend more on a plan that suits. Perhaps the one you should have purchased in the first place.

Instead of just repeating that YouTube works fine, state at which resolutions.

144 kbps won't be enough for most. Friend use a similar AIS plan and complain to me when the fast data gets used up.

Perhaps your suggestion is the same. perhaps not.

An unlimited 1 Mbps/4 Mbps/6 Mbps/10 Mbps/Max Speed plan would likely be best, as no slowing down. From £7.50 for a 30 day no slow down 24/7 connection.

That why there are so many options. Different people have differing requirements.

Can't imagine young people having the patience for a 128 kbps connection.

Otherwise the answer to everyone's question would be *900*1801#.

I find that everything I need to do works fine on True's 4Mbs 4G package, which costs 2675B per year incl VAT (that's 223B per month) and has no data cap at all, apart from a rather vague FUP, which all packages here have as far as I know. Seems better value than the 1Gb package, for those who are here most of the year.

You even get free calls on the Truemove H network thrown in, if you apply this month; *900*9962# and then the dial button.

2675 baht for 4 Mbps over 12 months.

AIS of course has the same thing, but without the same network free calls.

You're arguing for the sake of it and you're reminding me of someone who gets booted off every forum for consistently trolling on airline and phone threads. You've been clocked mate ok

I'm not arguing. Just stating the facts. Whereas you have been regularly caught on telling flat out lies.

One reason why I am not inclined to believe your YouTube story.

For instance, your claim that you have always been able to extend your Truemove H Tourist SIM beyond 90 days was somewhat contradicted by your earlier posts asking why you could not extend your SIM beyond 90 days.

That's not the only time when you simply made things up.

So let's leave it at that, shall we?

I'm guessing that you will feel the need to have the last word. So be my guest.

What was the last name that you got booted off Addicts (for about the 7th time)

Greyman was it !!

You need to change your posting style and grammar even though I'd have absolutely to reason to be looking for you it was immediate it was you

Just like back trawling through posts in an effort to find an angle dear oh dear.

FYI what on earth would ANYONE have to gain by saying either that youtube does or doesnt run perfectly normally after the 1gb data limit has been reached.

When you have absorbed that thought try engaging first gear next time instead of your relentless attempted point scoring that gets your thrown off forum after forum time after time as always.

I answered the OP. Why dont you do the same......out

For exactly the same reason that someone would swear blind that they could always extend their Tourist SIM beyond 90 days.....until they were confronted by their own earlier posts directly contradicting said statement.

Tell me, why did you lie continually about that?

Why should we believe you now?

P.S. Perhaps you didn't notice, but I made sensible suggestions to the OP long before you popped up with your '1 GB slowing down to 128kbps' option.

DTAC has a new prepaid over 1Mbps for 300 baht per month. It's fast enough for Line calls, YouTube and most other things. And It will not drop to 64 or 128 Kbps after reach 1-5GB Traffic volume. If you don't need the extra fast 100Mbps or faster then I think this offer sounds excellent.

DTAC also have a 5GB (100 Mbps) after that I think it's only 64Kbps. This is the one I still have at the moment, as I normaly use about 2-3GB per month. But the new 1Mbps sounds very interesting, as you not have to scare about become lower speeed, when use the internet on mobile too much.

And then there are the LineMobiles, which at least the commercials I see looks very cheap… Don't have any knowledge on that...
