Visa Overstay

Screwed up and have a flight out one day after my tourist visa expires. I know it's a 500 baht fine, but I'll be coming back in about 3 weeks. Does anyone know if this is 'black mark' on my file anywhere? I could bite the bullet and change some airline reservations but we also know what a pain that is and would be way more expensive than the 500. Any advice?

No charge for 1 day overstay unless something has changed. I did have a mark in an old passport on the one single occasion that I did it knowingly but like yourself seemed easier than trying to change reservations

I leaving from either airport in Bangkok you will not be fined for a overstay of less than 24 hours. The stamp will state that it was for less than 24 hours. 

No problem for anything later.

More to the point, what happens if you end up staying due to flight cancellation by airline ? Do you get a bad mark due to airline failure  ?

That all depends. Had you passed through immigration or not?

Before I qualified for a "1 year" visa I used to have 2 days of overstay 3 (sometimes 4) times a year as my holidays were always 31-33 days long.
All that ever happened was I was taken to a separate desk, paid the fine, was given a receipt, passport was stamped as per normal and I was on my way. Never had a hassle when I came back again and never had an extra stamp in my passport. I worried about it as well, especially after I'd done that a couple of times but they never even gave me a second glance whenever I came back again.

Had 1 day. Paid my 500 Baht, got a stamp for 1 day overstay but never had problems when re-entering later again.

Nope, you have to pay 500 THB for sure.

Not if you leave from either airport in Bangkok (BKK or DMK). At other airports and at land border crossing you will be fined 500 baht.

quite true. I just wanted to minimize the importance of stamp or whatever.

I miscalculated a stay in Pattaya some 18 months ago and a one day overstay. I got to the airport at 2ish in the morning, checked in asked where immigration was and was directed to an extremely lovely young lady who was 100% of the immigration at the time. I handed her my passport and had a five hundred note in my hand where upon she said don't bother and gave me a weeks extension!

So one day overstay seems to be a good method jumping the queue at Immigration - just mention "overstay", jump the line, pay ... and you are in.

Doesn't quite work that way!

Queue up like all others waiting your turn, then get to the desk, immigration officer then sees you are on overstay, get escorted to the overstay desk, plus, if you are real unlucky, wait for them to process others on overstay, then you are out!

So incredible again that the rule is different at airports ! Are you sure that land borders do not just pocket the money ?

I am not sure I understand your post. Which airport was this? Why was a "weeks extension" needed if you were flying out of the country (which I assume you were if you spoke with immigration)? Was your passport stamped with an extension of stay stamp?

The time stamp was probably done for 7 days and she couldn't be bothered changing it back for one stamp.

Anyone understand this? Surely the passport is not stamped with an exit stamp indicating a departure date 7 days in the future? What stamp is being referred to here?

I don't have a really have a clue without more info. 

It had to be an extension of some kind. Perhaps a courtesy extension immigration might issue with documents from the airline when a flight is cancelled or delayed done in error.
