YALA, 26th May 2018 (NNT) – The Yala Provincial Public Health Office has again warned the population against rabies after infected dogs were found in Yala Province.

Dr. Songkran Maichum, a doctor of the Yala Provincial Public Health Office, recently made an announcement on the situation of rabies in animals in Yala Province. Currently, two reports of positive rabies results have been found in Muang Yala District. The provincial authority has declared the area a temporary epidemic zone for rabies under the Animal Epidemics Act, B.E. 2558 (2015).

For the livestock office, the dogs and cats in the area have to be urgently vaccinated. As for humans, the Yala Provincial Public Health Office must urgently locate the individual exposed to the animal found to be with rabies and get him or her vaccinated. This is because, of the animals with rabies, one was found and reported before exposure. As for the other, it was found that a sick dog was brought to the livestock office where it died from the disease.

Another matter that the public health office needs to follow at present is a group of people who have not received vaccinations according to the schedule. This is still a matter of concern because among humans, prevention can be done only through complete vaccination. There is still no cure for this disease, which can lead to death. Anti-rabies vaccine for humans has been prepared by the Yala Hospital which insists that there is only limited supply.

If anyone in Yala is bitten by a dog or a cat, he or she needs to urgently clean his or her wound and apply medicine to it and immediately go to see the doctor for a full vaccination. One should not be misled by the animal’s size. Importantly, when seeing stray dogs, one must be very careful, not to step on or get involved with them.

Please advise the people of Yala on this matter, and for any questions about rabies, contact the Department of Disease Control's hotline, 1422.
