george
Outcry prompts spa to tear down phallic fence BANGKOK: -- A Thai spa has agreed to re-model its penis-shaped fence into lotus flowers after it offended neighbours, a government official said on Monday. The Sappaya Spa, located near the entrance of a small village and near a beach on the southern tourist island of Phuket, upset locals this month when builders erected the 18 Hindu Shiva Lingas around the property. "People can't stand them so they called us for help," Thawichart Intararit, chief of Phuket's culture office, told Reuters. After weeks of negotiations, the spa owner, a staunch Hindu follower, bowed to the outcry over the sculptures, which he thought would bring him good luck in business. "He promised to have workers use cement to re-shape them into lotus flowers from Monday," Thawichart said. Shiva Linga is the holy symbol of Lord Shiva, which religious scholars have given various interpretations of, including the symbol of copulation. Most of Thailand's 64 million people are Buddhists, many of whom also worship Hindu gods and practise Hindu rituals. --Reuters 2007-01-
Dupont
Nice to see the Authorities taking action. Won't be long before we see decisive action against, touts, timeshare salesmen, tuk tuks, gem stores, tailors, traffic regulations, murders, brutal assaults, drug taking, glue sniffing, underage drinking, child beggars, prostitution, corruption, building on forestry land, jet skis, garbage, water pollution duel pricing etc. All these things upset people, lots of people yet no action. Show em a willy and they move heaven and earth. I'm going in tomorrow to say a tailors tout, had his willy out. Problem of Tailors touts done and dusted by monday andybody? wintermute
Oh man. A penis shaped fence will surely bring down thai society. Let's not forget about the massive 25% of thai women involved in prostitution in this country. Oh no, face loss there.

john b good
one quarter of thai women are hookers ? oh really ? Maybe not 25% of ALL Thai women, but if you take the age group 18-35, 25% would be a reasonable figure. Consider all those in karaoke, spas, bars, go-go, not to mention the free lancers and the students who are paying their way through university. If they accept money for their "services" they are prostitutes. Edited February 2, 2007 by john b good
jbowman1993
That 25% sounds pretty high. What are your sources?

If they accept money for their "services" they are prostitutes. There are many, but 25% even of the age group mentioned ? Anyway, prostitution here cannot be compared to the western world, where part of the girls are forced, have their passport removed, have a brutal pimp... Here it seems like they just think it's a funny way to make some cash. Actually, that is why I have a lot of respect for all the girls working in 7/11 etc. for only a percentage of the money. Well, I also respect people like my wife, with a master degree and an almost insaturable desire to succeed in business, hehe. Lucky enough, not all Thais are as bad as we make them. kmart
Thread derailed already? 25% of Thai women engaged in the oldest profession??? I don't think so, and I'm erm, not going to .... sit on the fence, regarding this spurious allegation. Anybody got a picture of this fence?
