Hey Im going be studying abroad in Bangkok in August. Should i sign up w/ Thammasat university or Rangsit university. I understand Rangist Uni is about 25 minutes north of the true downtown part, but where exactly is Thammasat Uni. What are these Uni's known for, like partying or mostly studying....If you could chose which one would you pick and why...thanks in advance

Oh gawd I can see where this thread is going to go and we are going to get into a huge debate here about what your purpose of studying in Bangkok is. Are you here for the education or the party or something else?

What do you wish to get out of your study here, what is the program you are studying, what are your end goals once you finish?

If you wanted to attend the better of the two Universities mentioned above in terms of 'so called quality' education then Thammasat is the better one as it considered the No2 University in Bangkok with Chula being considered No 1. Rangsit doesn't even figure.

Im pretty much studying abroad for partying, and learning a new culture. All im trying to do with my studies is get a c or better so all my credits transfer over. You can debate if thats wrong to study abroad just for the fun factor but pretty much this is the only time where its kinda free for me to go live somewhere else for a long time.

But I definetly do not want to go to some horrible UNI....Both websites seemed legit but thats why i need some information coming away from the advisors.....So does anyone else think Rangist isnt a good school?

Thammasat is further up the 'pecking' order in terms of what is considered a "good" university here. Are you doing your whole undergraduate degree here or just a goof-off year? Either one would be fine for goofing off, and you'll find plenty of partying at any uni. Please note, though, that Rangsit is further out and away from any other place you'd ever want to be.

If there's any chance that the studying itself is at all important, you should choose Thammasat, by a hair.

Actually, I'd say they Mahidol has left Chula far in the dust in the past decade... The rankings the government published recently would tend to bear out that fact. The thing that Chula has going for them is a very solid reputation, built over a long period of time.

Specialties

Tammasat - political science

Chula - business/education/liberal arts/law

Silipakorn - Humanities and Art

Kasestsart - General Ed

Mahidol - medicine/music/liberal arts/business/science

Rangsit - Gen Ed

Assumption - Business/Law

Both schools are pretty good, but Thammasat is stronger, and more centraly located, better facilities, etc.

If you are looking solely at an international program, I would recommend MUIC - Mahidol University International College, as having the best reputation and best programs in Bangkok.

I concur .. for an international program (taught in English) MUIC is about the only GOOD choice ... second would probably be BU .. and third ABAC for programs in Eng.

I study at Bangkok U. International program, and I have actually been mildly impressed with the quality of the teachers there. I transferred from Rangsit to BU about a year and a half ago. I can honestly say that the international program at rangsit is a JOKE! Not to mention how far it is outside of town. Id say its only advantage is that it is somewhat of a close-knit community out there as far as the foreign students go. Youll make some good friends. I would definitely recommend Thammasat or BU over Rangsit.

No matter where you go, you're gonna have loads of fun!

Hope this helped.

Funny, some TU (Thammasat) Alumni would beg to differ I am sure (I am not one). TU, Chula, Mahidol, are the big 3 for education. Rangsit is good for people who want to be close to the city but not live in it. The air is cleaner out there, accomadations a bit cheaper, in all an easy life. It is 10 minutes or so from a big mall and about 25 minutes from the heart of bangkok (course depends onmode of transport, traffic, tollways, etc).

For both TU and Chula you will be right in the city. On the odd chance you are an Agriculture related major then Kasestsart would be good.

Thammasat has a campus further away than Rangsit, although easy to get to on the expressway but expensive on a daily basis. Used to be for the first year only when it first openned but maybe this has changed. Make sure it does not figure in the International prog.

If you are in the original campus it is surrounded by attractions of all sorts.

As I understand it, the Thammasart Rangsit campus is now for undergraduates and the Thammasart campus near sanum luang is for graduate programs. That being the case both the Thammasart Rangsit campus and Rangsit university are actually not very far from one another. I was an international student at the international college of Rangsit University and can tell you that it is a great place for making friends and really changed my life, but in terms of quality education I would say Thammasart is the better school. However, the environment around Rangsit University is superior. So if I were you, I would study at Rangsit University purely based on the surrounding area. I now work near the Thammasart rangsit campus so I suppose I am somewhat in the know. :o
