PM urges public to consider coal power plants

 

 

BANGKOK, 6th June 2018 (NNT) - Following power outages in the Northeast during the past week, the Prime Minister has ordered the Ministry of Energy to ensure that outages do not affect economic zones and urged the public to consider the possibility of coal power plants. 

Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said today the Minister of Energy has delivered a report to the Cabinet on power outages in the Northeast during the past week.

 

He revealed that peak power usage coupled with a lightning strike at the Hongsa Power Station in Laos had restricted the ability to supply electricity to the region.

 

Since the report, the Prime Minister has urged the public to consider and study the benefits and impact of coal power plants. 

The Prime Minister also ordered the Ministry of Energy to cut power on a zone basis and prioritize based on impact.

Dear Boss Hog, may I ask your problem with Solar Power ?

Coal? There is already enough pollution in this country, he want to make that worse? What century that man lives in the 19th?.  Right no money left for investments after the futuristic satellites, so coal it is, brown coal (lignite) the most dirty one.

This re-emphasis on coal smells a lot like some backroom deal has been lined up or already done.

His famous EEC Corridor dream is not going to work if there is not enough power and I doubt that solar or wind is going to cut it. Unreliability of Laos power is another added concern.

Given this renewed approach my tip is there WILL be a coal-fired power station....somewhere in Thailand.

I doubt it will have much impact on the air quality in the Asian region given the thousands of coal stations presently chugging away in China, India, Indonesea, Japan and Vietnam. And there are plenty more being built right now.

If it was any country other than Thailand I would agree. I imagine nuclear power plants require precision maintenance. That's not something the Thais are good at. They can't even maintain sewage treatment plants.

If they could harness big p and small p’s hot air, they could solve this problem easily. Although their air may be more toxic than the coal itself. 

To be fair, Thailand does have available coal reserves and very few reliable and clean alternative energy sources to meet their energy demands that make financial sense. 

And heaven forbid this mob get their hands on the atom. 

That being said, there have been advances in coal combustion tech. At Mae Moh, there is an on-going upgrade with Marubeni/ALSTOM super-critical burners.

Consumption/demand is the problem IMHO.  

There are cleaner alternatives, I agree. But Thailand can't even sort itself out at the time being. 

In terms of energy production, Thailand should stick with coal for now and have an eye to the future and invest in alternative energy sources. 

Lest we forget, it is a developing nation after all and I come from a nation built on coal and other mineral resources (when it was developing not long ago) . And despite our technology and wealth, we have yet to totally embrace alternative energy (with the exception of nuclear and hydropower---both of which have are known to not be environmentally friendly). 

Coal is the pragmatic approach IMHO.

One works with what they have in their toolbox.  

So it's a no to plastic bags and a yes to coal power stations ?? This does NOT make sense.

Burn the plastic bags. They are made from hydrocarbons anyway.  Burn rubbish in Pattaya. Anything but coal.  Renewables and backup supplies in batteries to manage peaks and breakdowns.  It is working in NZ, Australia and other places.  In the US renewables are now 50% cheaper than coal and prices falling every year.  Trump made promises to out of work coal miners he cannot keep without legislating compulsory use of coal power.  By the time they build one more here it will be a white elephant.  If they have to go thermal natural gas is cleaner but he should look harder at what Australia is doing and think outside the current square.  Solar panels on govt buildings, factory Tory roofs and military bases closer to the places it is consumed to cut down transmission losses. Pay large factories to cover their roofs with p.v. panels. Nissan in UK will be generating 50% of their power off their own factory roof solar panels in cold foggy England.  Surely that must say something.  No shortage of big factory roofs or sunshine here.  What important influential persons own coal reserves here? That is the burning question, pun intended.

China has cancelled any more coal plants in favour of renewables.  Coal is completely the wrong decision.

Sounds to me like Trump is trying to save his political ass by selling coal to Thailand. Kill 2 birds with one stone, sell Pennsylvania coal and balance trade. Screw the side effects. The deal is probably already inked.

With coal plants, they can probably burn plastics and computer electronics waste right along side the coal. 

coal is not that plentiful in Thailand and its time is up to be used on this planet

 

Where coal is plentiful is Indonesia where Banpu(Thai set co) mines and exports its coal. Then China who have huge amounts of coal to export.

 

This is about Banpu and the Chinese influencing and paying for policy. There should be no surprise with the Chinese who been heavy players with the junta since the coup and have chinese/thai firms like cpgroup in their pockets.

Buying coal from China would create some glorious kickback opportunities. Ongoing too !
