sspacer Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 I made it to Bangkok last week and got scammed in Ayutthaya by a tuk tuk driver. He took me and a thai friend to a remote wat for 200 bhat but charged us 400 baht to take us back. Since there were no other form of transportation to get back we had to accept this deal. It was disconcerting because I thought my thai friend from Ayutthaya would have watched out for this. I wonder if something similar might happen if I take a long tail boat to Koh Hey from Chalong Pier? When one negotiates the price is it just for one way transportation to the island and then one must find a way back or do you negotiate a round trip price and the long tail waits for you? How easy is it to get a reasonable price on the return trip during the low season? I will be there the week of the 18th of June.
pagallim Posted June 8, 2018 Posted June 8, 2018 Think you will find that long tails will only do round trips. Negotiate the price before you leave, with the price being for the boat, not per person.
stevenl Posted June 8, 2018 Posted June 8, 2018 In addition to the previous post, from Rawai beach you will find it easier to find a boat, plus since it is closer it should be cheaper as well.
sspacer Posted June 9, 2018 Author Posted June 9, 2018 thanks. i will do that. What is a reasonable price from chalong pier to Koh Hey this time of year.
sspacer Posted June 11, 2018 Author Posted June 11, 2018 Looking at previous posts, it looks like I should expect to pay 1500 to 2000 bahts for a round trip to Koh He from Chalong bay or Rawaii. Does that seem about right?
sspacer Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 another question is do I pay for the boat before or after the trip?

Assume they were in on the scam, and received 50% of the return fare. Assume all your restaurant and bar costs also include a 'commission' for your 'friend'.
sspacer Posted June 15, 2018 Author Posted June 15, 2018 In this instance, I paid the 200 baht to go to the wat and she paid the 400 baht to return. I offered her the 200 baht which I had but she would not take it. She did this even though she was about to lose her job the following week. It is true that many people in thailand will scam you, but there are also many that will go out of their way to help you. I am amazed at the small acts of kindness that thai people will do for a stranger. It is hard to find a country where the people are nicer than Thailand.
