Exactly. How many states have legal prostitution in the US? The UK and other countries legalise prostitutes, but penalise men that use them, which is PC insanity.

NZ has legal prostitution, and the country didn't collapse when they brought that in.

Not exactly true regarding the UK - In public places both the prostitute and the customer could be penalised (soliciting/kerb crawling).

In private, neither would breaking the law.

I remember well the change when I was working in London, they made it so the customer of prossies would be prosecuted, not the prossie, which was the reverse of what it had been. Could be that the policy failed or it wasn't made into a law.

It was a stupid PC thing because it was penalising women, and they couldn't have that, so they made it about the "evil" men. I was alarmed at King's Cross station when a very attractive prossie approached me as I thought she might have been an undercover cop trying  to entrap me under the new diktat.

How remarkable you think prostitution is the first thing that people globally would think of, not elephants, not food, not temples, not the islands, not beaches, not even corruption, hot weather or road traffic deaths, but prostitution!

Even more remarkable is you think the success of the country has been built on prostitution, not on trade and exports, not on tourism but on prostitution!

I'm guessing you live in Pattaya.

I live in London,

Almost everyone I know thinks 'kiddy fiddling' when Thailand is mentioned.

Thinking prostitution would be an improvement!

Perhaps stop reading The Sun and hanging around with people who do.

The same as in Thailand, although Thailand is a bit more liberal by allowing gogo bars and soapies!

Who cares , this thread isnt about America

Look at the post above that talks about Pakistan and Nevada. The original post is about a society in denial over sex. I gave another example of such denial that shows Thais aren't the only ones.

"A reminder of how far the state of denial is in Thailand was made apparent Monday when Salinee Chumsuwan, director of the Office of Culture Monitoring at the culture ministry, gave an interview to a local media saying sex toys should not be legalized as long as there is no solid research supporting them. She said research from other countries cannot be used because the context is different. The director recommended that people who have urges should instead resort to meditation or sport."

Deary, deary, deary me...

And dreary dreary dreary her.  If she ever changes her mind the street side evening stalls in many places now carry a wide selection on open display. That has crept in over the last five years.  Previously I don't know where you could have bought a vibrator or other sex toy here. No actual sex shops but as we all know, for most of us in need, plenty of the real thing EVERYWHERE!

So Londoners are ignorant then and London is crime ridden.

Thai bashing happens daily here. Imagine playing chess everyday then complaining on a chess forum the game is terrible.

Defies logic.

It's ilegal but mention Thailand anywhere in the world and the first thing anyone thinks of is prostitutes.  I don't think Thailand is known for anything else but sex and they have built the country on it.

Amongst the men whom I talk to, you are correct, they all snicker when Thailand is mentioned. But amongst women, they speak of beautiful beaches and Thai food (but presumably they are quite aware of the sex image).

Famous for cheap prices, warm weather, food and islands. Millions of families and backpackers go.

Of course sex tourists only see the sex as an attraction. That's the kind of people they are.

These sex tourists have hardly seen Thailand outside of Sukhumvit, Pattaya or Patong. If hookers were cheap back home they would just stay home.

Nevada is one of the few places in the world that i think has it right.  It is legal but only in certain areas.  They have set up chicken ranches that serve every person's desire and also very much protect the girl.

What? People in Nevada have sex with chickens? And serve their every desire? And the chickens are protected in law?

I don`t believe Thailand is any longer the biggest brothel in the World.

I`ve been here a long time and whereas years ago there were brothels and ladyhouses in abundance, there days most have been shut down. Travel North from Bangkok to anywhere up country and there is virtually nothing.

Also taking into consideration that most of the Thai sex industry is geared for Thai clientele, that westerners hardly see or know anything about. It`s like 2 parallel Universes, there is a flourishing sex industry in Thailand, but these days is operating online, Thai freelance and sideline girls, mostly off limits to Farangs.

Aye, seems the military did some heavy cleaning...

Or would it be that the girls are deserting the night scene?

From their own will, due to pressure from police and government, or did they become richer?

Even Thaifriendly, the bar girls and online hookers all claim that they are looking for a husband now.. (one there used to be one of my regular)...

Strange turn of events in last 2-3 years...

What a bizarre title for the article. I have a dear friend, who worked for one of the largest HIV foundations in Thailand for over ten years. She actually ran the foundation. She told me, per capita, that there were more sex workers in the US, than in Thailand. I know. You are going to say no way. I said the same thing to her. And she said that the entire industry is so hidden, and so far underground, that few know of it's existence. But, because America may be one of the most sexually repressed, and puritanical (totally fake) nations on earth, it is all about avoiding the authorities, who want to make sex as illegal, illicit, naughty, nasty, and prohibited as possible.

She said if you consider all escorts, sugar daddy girls, massage shops, porn actors, nude photography, etc, the numbers were higher than Thailand. Here it is open, and in your face. Not in America. It is all hidden. I believe it. The industry there is enormous.

No surprise to me at all.

Did you think of another reason instead of money? What about attraction to different female or non-female bodies?

A good article but alas a little naïve. The girls probably stand a better chance of managing their own welfare than relying on a Government run legalisation and support system which would simply be legalised exploitation to line their own pockets, no less than legalised pimping.

Thailand is not the biggest brothel in the world. USA Is the biggest - and dirtiest - and richest - brothel in the world.

and there are plenty of filmed evidence to prove it.

fully aggree, only one correction - the US sex industry is not hidden, and not shy from anything. it is full blown in everybody's face.

from the san fernando porn industry, via the so called GAY PARADE,  and ending with the president's ex-callgirl wife - USA is the biggest richest and dirtiest whore house in the world.

Only that you know how americans are - they must come and preach and look at everybody from above, so they can play the global police and bomb them here and there.

acctually, it is the US and the west who spread prostitution and HIV  around the globe. 30 years ago there

was no HIV in thailand. it spread only threw the sperm of farang.

Quote

There are an estimated 300,000 sex workers, according to an estimate by Empower Foundation, a leading advocate for their rights.

300,000?

That estimate seems rather conservative - unless they're just counting pros and not including semi-pros, sideliners, mistresses, kept women with foreign "sponsors," et al.
