help avoiding conversations ?

<Smile> Mai Ow Naa Krap.

This is it in a nutshell.  Short, sweet, and effective.

The smile keeps it friendly.
The 'Mai Ow' is saying you don't want wherever they are selling, peddling, or whatever the reason is that they are trying to engage you in conversation.
"Naa" makes the rejection very polite, as does formally ending with a "Krap" or "Ka"

If they keeping trying to engage you, keep repeating the phrase while smiling, breaking eye contact and walking away.

That's an expression to get in to trouble on the fast lane.. (one of the words you definitely shouldn't use when you don't know their meanings). Or do you want explain the OP how to avoid a discussion by starting a fight?

Loosen up fella it was a joke on the "dark" side. ?

Why don't you want to talk to people?

You can say - mâi khâo jai     =   I don't understand

maybe start by saying - Kor tord  =  Sorry

Or just say - Pom Poot Thai Mai Dai  = I don't speak Thai.

I was told by my Thai friends just say, sounds to me like "chip high" don't know what means though. ?

That is a very rude response and could land you in trouble. "Mai kow jai", which means you don't understand them, is the easy way out.

Nowhere in the OP does it say he ordered in Thai.

If he was able to speak basic Thai (enough to order food) then one would think he'd be able to answer his own question.

This is the most polite way, it'll be well received and understood by almost all nationals here.

Your Thai friends are correct.

The OP sounds like a miserable bugger. Why not make eye contact, smile, reply to your host's genial enquiries, share a joke, complain about the weather, it's just small talk, make a little effort to understand these most basic language skills, use hand signals if you must. You will be amazed at how much better your day will become.
