Health volunteers mobilize in Pattaya dengue ‘red zone’

PATTAYA:--The Banglamung Village Health Volunteer Club mobilized members to combat dengue fever in the Pattaya area, much of which has been declared a “red zone” for the disease.

Nongprue, Nong Plalai, Takhiantia and Pong sub-districts all have been declared red zones for dengue with Huay Yai listed as a yellow zone.

In all of Banglamung, 117 people have fallen in with dengue, 61 of them in Nongprue, which encompasses Pattaya, and 26 in Naklua. Another 13 patients became sick in Nong Plalai, five in Pong and five in Takhiantia.

At a volunteer club meeting at Nong Pungkae Health Promotion Hospital June 9, group president Wanchai Sanngam said the vast majority of victims are age 25 or younger.

He urged club members to aggressively publicize the severity of the dengue outbreak in their villages and show people how to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds in stagnant water, plant pots, tires, buckets, puddles and other places with standing water.

Why hasn't the Town Hall mobilised its Health officials to leave their A/C offices and get on the front line?  I'm not sure about eradicating breeding grounds; the female will just go further afield. (Most Thai drainage systems provide perfect chambers every ten metres.)  A couple of drops of washing up liquid in a receptacle encourages the mother to lay.  Because the surface tension is reduced she often drowns.  Empty the container daily; repeat.
