A thief has stolen a sword which was located with the heroine statue in a temple in Thalang.

A facebook user ‘Prasong Trairat’ posted a photo on his personal Facebook yesterday (June 24) with a message reading “The sword of the grandmothers (reference to the heroines’ name by locals) disappeared last night. The thief is not aware of his sin.”

The photo shows a picture of the two heroines (Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon or Ya Mook Ya Jan) in a statue at Muang Gomarapat Temple or Wat Muang in Thalang in Thalang.

Really!  Not overreacting a little?

"Mr Prasong and locals are hunting for the thief which they believe to be local children nearby."

This is a great part of Thai culture and history. You obviously have not lived in Thailand long enough to learn this.

This person better pray he is not caught. He will spend some time in the police back room and will die in prison. Stupid act for which they will pay dearly.

The above is a classic example of why you shouldn't post when drunk...

Phuket Police hunt for the thief of the heroine statue sword

By Kritsada Mueanhawong

A thief has stolen a sword which was part of a statue of the Phuket’s Heroines which was in a temple in Thalang.

Khun Prasong who was a previous Thepkrasattri Mayor says, “Muang Gomarapat Temple is an important place for Phuket people. This is a place where the annual ‘Thalang Victory Day’ is being held every March. People always come here to worship the heroine statue. It’s certainly a sad incident that the sword has been stolen from the statue. The two heroines are important to Phuket and Thai history, who fought for the city.”

“We believed that the thief is most probably local people as other people wouldn’t know about the statues or that the sword can be taken off. This is not the first time that this kind of thing has happened. A private sector has suggested we install CCTV cameras at the temple.”

Well, at least Thailand has yet to put female nouns to the sword, as has been done in the UK. Apparently, it's sexist to describe a woman as a heroine. You have to call them heroes or risk the wrath of the feminazis.

You work it out. I'm darned if I can.

Really? How long do I have to be here to understand local culture and crime and punishment?  Having lived in Thailand for over 30 years doesn't make you a guru. It just means you're out of touch with the real world!

You've lived a bit too long in your own imagination if you believe children stealing cultural relics face the death penalty.

I agree with you, OC, however, taipan1949 has a point.

If local Thai children have stolen the sword, if / when caught, they will probably be made to shave their head, enter a temple, and gain "enlightenment."

However, if some stupid, young, possibly drunk, foreign backpacker has stolen the sword as a souvenir, and is caught with it in his / her backpack, on the way out of Thailand, then I think they are in for some gaol time, before serious extortion, probably paid for by mum and dad, to get them out.
