There will be some attenuation of the signal due to rain (this is microwave frequencies) but it shouldn't stop working completely. Same with WiFi

I imagine any failures are maybe more associated with power or network failures during heavy rail, not so much the 4G signal or wifi signal not being able to get through the rain.

So far the mobile network has been about the most reliable technical system in Thailand from my experience.
Even if the whole subdistrict has a blackout, the mobile tower 2km away still works fine (UPS? independent power supply?).

 

If there would be a widespread outage just due to rain, this should have made headlines.

 

The frequency range of WiFi and standard conform 4G is in the 2.x GHz range.

By theory this should not be too sensitive for rain.

If the signal is weak from the start (clear air) and rain excessive (like happening in Thailand): maybe?

 

Problems start (from own experience) when you look at satellite TV reception (Ku band, 11 to 12 GHz).

 

If rain could easily stop 4G, 5G ("internet of things") then be prepared for some epic disasters in the future).

I find the same. Power may go out but the phone signal keeps on going.

Yes....a weaker signal usually results in a slower speed....whether it's Wifi, 3G, or 4G.   Once the signal strength reaches a certain level the speed will greatly reduce....get slower and slower and as the signal gets weaker and weaker.   As the signal gets weaker more transmission errors occur which cause "re-transmissions."   Re-transmission is like doing the same thing again/a do-over because it didn't work the first time....so, your speed/bandwidth decreases.

 

Now with satellite TV transmission a weaker signal will cause data errors once the signal gets so weak, but there is no re-transmissions like in Wifi/3G/4G so you just end up missing parts of the video/audio transmission which distorts your video/audio.

It shouldn't "stop working" altogether unless there is some overriding issue (affecting the signalling system, provisioning system, back-haul, etc.)

 

You usually have 2-6 base-stations nearby.

 

I guess if you're in a 1/2 bar location, in some remote area, and you get very, very heavy rain, wind and fog you could get into stoppage time?

 

I too have found the mobile network (in Bangkok anyway) to be quite reliable, and I haven't noticed any network stoppage during inclement weather.

 

Are you having problems? If so, what are they?
