The first batch of 22 unregistered foreign migrant workers rounded up in the Labour Ministry-led crackdown since July 1 will face legal action and then be deported, Department of Employment director-general Anurak Tossarat said yesterday.

The department officials has, since July 1, joined with police and national security officers nationwide in 113 teams conducting random searches at establishments nationwide, he said.

So far, 22 unregistered foreign migrant workers have been rounded up from five establishments. “We will continue this stringent measure [against unregistered foreign workers and their employers],” he said.

The Labour Ministry had given employers until June 30 to complete the registration of their Cambodian, Myanmar and Laotian workers or they and the workers would face hefty fines.

According to Labour Minister Police General Adul Sangsingkeo, the fine (as per the amended Royal Decree on the Management of Alien Workers BE 2560) against the workers ranged from Bt5,000 to Bt50,000 plus deportation and a two-year ban on working in Thailand while the fine against employers would be between Bt10,000 and Bt100,000 per illegal worker hired.

113 teams nationwide come up with 22 snags.

It's as if they don't really want to kick them out after all.

Well, if they are all as effective as that decidedly chubby lean mean steely eyed dealer of death, inexplicably clad in desert combat kit to raid a building site...

Poor buggers now they'll have to pay half their wages for protection.

He's possibly having his house painted over the weekend for free.

They can pretend they want these migrants out all they want, we know the rest.....

Haven't we seen this before?

The Junta says that it will lead a crackdown. There is publicity involved to show how "tough" the government is. The workers, assuming correctly that they will be shaken down for all their cash, head for the exits. The Junta relents after an outcry by businesses dependent on migrant labour. Rules are relaxed.

Rinse and repeat.

It begins...give it a week before all hell breaks loose.

A flame post and answer to it have been removed.

It will be interesting to see what happens to construction firms.  The fact that they had this time to register the workers and have not means that they are going to have issues.  CONGRATS TO GOVERNMENT

Unlike some leaders, they are doing what they said they would.

Let's see is Thailand better now than before.  A little but it needs more work just hope the next elected group does not take it back where it was.

I never understand the issue. Register these people, take their biometrics and let them work.

On the other hand where were the employers rounded up and forced to the police station for enforcement?

There are 2 million unregistered workers in Thailand and this incompetent Ministry using it's "stringent measures" has found only 22 of them leaving 1,999,978 to go.

After the first stuff up in March this effort looks like nothing more than a replay. Another mass exodus is on the cards. With employers and workers being the losers while the government is left with egg on it's face once more. Who will be filling the job vacancies when these migrant workers are deported or leave of their own accord because they find the registration process too onerous?

Another SNAFU junta initiative.
