Saving young kids deserves more than they have received so far. One is going home already with little reported in the press of any gift etc. They were not paid as far as I have read and the work was extremely difficult otherwise the Thai authorities would not have needed international aid.Thailand should do more for the British Divers they are heroes.

They are doing there job, I wouldn't expect any reward and I doubt they do!

Luck of the draw....Many teams on rotation/shifts - they happened to be the one's on at that time....

Just as many/actually more unsung heros besides the 3 that had the photo ops....

 

All of them are "hero's" at an equal level....

 

Including the other thousand+ or so there 24/7 doing the thankless tasks.....

I concur there British expert guys doing there job.

I suspect that the last thing any of these heroic guys would want is a load of hype and attention bought upon their acts of bravery.

A cold beer would be more valued by them and a simple  " Thank you " would suffice

Why does there need to be so many "hero's" these days, they did a great job, a job they have trained long and hard for no doubt, it must also be a job they enjoy doing, I'm sure the satisfaction of finding the kids was a fantastic feeling, but are they "hero's"? don't forget they had a huge team backing them up, what are they "junior backup hero's'

One is a fireman, the other is an IT consultant. I'm a bit confused. I suppose at a stretch one could say that maybe the fireman guy is a professional life saver but I doubt the West Midlands Fire Service employs him as a cave diver.

 

Cave diving for these guys is a hobby or more like a passion. If it is their job why did , reportedly, they pay their own airfares. 

 

But agreed they probably don't want a reward. Success will be its own reward.

As many posters have said, these volunteers from overseas are all cut from the same cloth. they do what they do without wanting plaudits and publicity. 

They are dedicated to saving lives and helping others in distress. People like these heroes do not seek the limelight, they come, get on with the job and when done they are gone, happy in the knowledge they were able to help..

It matters not one whit whether they were American, Australian , English or Chinese, the most important thing, is that the boys were discovered. The Englishmen are not bragging about their finding the boys, they are merely happy to have found them. Typical self effacing style of some Brits.

I am aware that you are attempting to be facetious, but do you really think under the circumstances the powers that be would insist on work permits for highly trained cave divers when every minute counts to save lives..

It did however happen 14 years ago when the tsunami hit, much to Thailand's sham e and embarrassment.

Perhaps Thailand has moved on and matured a wee bit?

So far the team have had all their expenses paid and have been made visa and work permit exempt, including having the honour of being made personal guests by the King, probably the highest honour any foreigners could be bestowed in Thailand.

 

I have no doubts the British rescue team will gain a lot of work out of this, now news of their fantastic achievement has gone worldwide. It`s going to be;  we need a rescue team, who we gonna call?

 

I`m sure these guys will go down in history and always remembered as the British team who performed a miracle in Thailand, and that alone is worth it`s weight in gold.

I feel sorry for these guys to be honest. If you have read up about them they are not people who want or enjoy being in the limelight, they just love doing their hobby which is cave diving. They have become known for a long time as being extremely proficient at what they do.

 

They are volunteers for cave rescue in the UK, it is a charity which is run entirely on donations from the public. They are not doing this for money, fame, or to prove a point. They hear of someone in trouble, in a world where they are optimal operators, and they see a chance to help someone out of a bad situation in a place they know their skills and experience are possibly the persons only chance of survival, or in worse circumstances to recover the body for the family (as happened in France).

 

They have been called upon by foreign governments in the past, and they have gone and done what they do and then they have left, people in the caving world know them, what they have done etc, but don't make a fuss, they don't want it.

 

They will find all the media attention extremely intrusive I'm sure. Of course it's understandable that we all want to know about them, but maybe they just want some privacy, and just to be left alone to do what they do.

I believe that it was reported right at the start that Thai Airways provided free tickets for them.

Actually I don't think it was the luck of the draw. The Brit divers were brought in to blaze the trail as the other divers weren't experienced or skilled enough to be able to find their way through the network of caves without any visibility, maps or lines... The Brit guys were the ones who did the hard work exploring and forging ahead and laid out the lines so other less experienced divers could follow them through. It's extremely difficult and takes a great deal of bravery to go into a cave blind, squeezing through tight gaps when there's no guarantee you'll even be able to turn around in the space you get into, no visibility at all. There's probably only a handful of people in the world who can do this safely, which is why the Brits were brought in.

Few posters seem to understand the nature and character of the rescuers, they shun the limelight and any reward, for them, cave diving is a hobby and not something to do for reward or fame, they enjoy the challenge of the logistics. There's some really good articles about them in the UK press, perhaps read one or two.

That's right. The French specifically asked for them in 2010 to help recover the body of a diver. They also helped in a successful rescue of 13 divers in Mexico in 2004.

Yes, I remember that.  But moved on and matured a wee bit, doubtful.

Thai Citizenship? Are we really talking about giving the British Divers their due credit or is this about Thais not accepting foreigners into their country? Two diferent topics (smile).

Giving someone Thai citizenship can hardly be construed to be a reward.

 

Besides, as others have said , they don't seek the limelight and just want to do the job and get a good result.

I think if you look into what actually happend, 3-4 months after the tsunami there was a crackdown on volunteer visa's and work permits etc because it was starting to be abused. People were turning up as volunteers with their golf clubs and trying to start businesses etc. A small percentage were profiteering hence the crackdown.

I would think giving them a "prize" for their efforts would cheapen the value of the work they do and  appear to ignore the importance of all those, Thai or foreign, who have contributed to the exemplary collective effort.
