International travellers drive tourism boom in Kingdom’s secondary destinations

By The Nation

Expedia Group, the global travel platform, on Tuesday revealed that international travellers had become the driving force behind the tourism boom in Thailand’s secondary destinations.

The company’s statistics show that nearly 90 per cent of the demand for travel to Chiang Rai, Koh Lipe (in Satun), Mae Hong Son, Trang and Trat had come from international travellers in the 12 months ending on June 30, and that the pace of overall inbound demand to these destinations had grown by 30 per cent, year on year.

Not sure the importance of this statistics as domestic tourism activity generates up to half of the total tourist revenues.

In the larger picture 9.8 million or more than 27% of all arrivals came from China in 2017.\

In the first 5 months of 2018 about 30% are from China.

In terms of national security and economic sustainability, the Thai government is placing Thailand further in a precipitous economic position with a regional superpower.
