SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's state media on Monday lashed out at the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump in an usually direct attack, accusing him of "starring in his own carefully orchestrated street fighter-style deceitful drama".

Trump's wish for others to play along with his drama is "wishful thinking," the ruling Communist Party's People's Daily newspaper said in an editorial.

The editorial said the United States had escalated trade friction with China, and turned international trade into "zero-sum game".

"Governing a country is not like doing business," the editorial said, arguing that Trump's actions imperilled the national credibility of the United States.

After two days of trade talks between the two countries in Washington last week, China agreed to “substantially reduce” the $375 billion annual trade surplus it has over the U.S. by buying more American goods, but there was no mention of any specific import and export targets in the statement agreed to by the two countries.

Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas cautioned Wednesday that the United States needs to remain “steely-eyed” and make sure “China isn’t playing us for fools.”

Good job Trump, it's about time someone tried to get America a fair deal. Our incompetent politicians have been costing us hundreds of billions of trade deficits for years now. If tariffs are so bad then why won't you drop yours China? China only respects free trade when it benefits them.

Two ways to narrow the trade deficit:

1) Make China buy more (but then you have to produce something they actually want) or

2) Buy less. And therein lies the problem. The US consumes too much so it has a trade deficit with nearly every other country (and an unsustainable debt on top). Tariffs are not going to solve that.

Is this too simple or is it basically right?

If a country has big budget deficits it's going to buy more from abroad than it sells abroad. So if you cut the trade deficit with China, it will only increase with other nations. I call that foolish but apparently you believe that should be called progress.
