A police captain won praise from Facebook users for controlling his temper instead of shooting a motorcyclist in self-defence when the biker damaged his pickup truck with a cleaver.

The incident happened on a road in Tambon Hua Rua in Ubon Ratchathani’s Muang district at 1.50pm on August 3, said Pol Captain Somporn Laosing, 59, deputy inspector of 22nd Border Patrol Police Division.

Somporn posted video clips and photos from his dashboard camera on his Facebook wall on Monday. By Tuesday morning, the post had drawn over 2,800 reactions and 2,700 comments and had been shared over 5,700 times.

The clips showed the unidentified young motorcyclist swerving his bike left and right, apparently to try to block Somporn’s pickup.

Somporn said he was off duty that day but still carried a gun in his truck.

He said he used his horn to warn the motorcyclist that he wanted to overtake him but the motorcyclist became angry and tried to block his way.

The motorcyclist then stopped his motorcycle to block Somporn's pickup and walked back to him to demand that he step outside, before hitting his windshield with a cleaver.

Somporn eventually drove away from the scene to avoid the motorcyclist , but the biker hit the side of his pickup with the cleaver.

The policeman said he was very angry but reminded himself that he was about to retire at the end of next month and so did not want any legal trouble.

Somporn said he has filed a complaint with the Muang Ubon Ratchathani police station but police have yet to locate the motorcyclist.

Most comments on the post said the motorcyclist was very lucky to survive that day, and many thanked Somporn for doing his best to control his temper.

So if he wasn't about to retire, he would have shot the man just for waving a cleaver? since when you bring a gun to a clod weapon fight? should he waved his badge and shout that he's a policeman that would have been enough to calm the bugger down one would think...

You should set up working as a trainer for US law enforcement services. They need your advice badly.

In most police forces it is a requisite that they are able to read and remember number plates. It looks from the video that this guy had one. Why did he not phone work and get this guy stopped further on ? Did not want to mess up his day off ?

They will catch the guy,he is seen clearly on video, why the need to bash the Police in this?

Praise to the man who could have taken a life and claimed self defence, but decided not to.

I know this is a little off topic but in many other countries the nutter would have received a full clip.

He should've used it. Idiots like this shouldn't get the opportunity to reproduce.

Set for retirement, not taking a chance that the gun misfires and this loony kills him?

Good choice, not knocking him off his bike, generous.

I hope your mates catch up with him on a dark night.

In your world maybe...but not in this guys world...Flashing a Badge would have probably done the opposite to calming the situation, the guy was clearly High, Drunk or just plan stupid. I think the cop did well not to shoot him but I am no advocate of "doing nothing" that just appeases and encourages such behavior...I've seen it time and time again Thai guy is a BIG man when he has a Gun or Knife but put him one on one with just fists and he will S&%T himself. I hope the cops catch him but I'm sure even then he will not face any serious consequences.

Praise to the man who's a cop for all of his life and didn't do his job? The drunk freak might have caused accidents after the too lazy to do something cop, let him go. One phone call in the beginning and the cops would have been all around the drunk/high on drugs guy to make sure that he's away from any people he could harm. Let him get sober in a cell, pay a hefty fine and next time he might think twice? Wouldn't that be common sense?

Who knows what this guy did after the cop let him go? No bullet needed, the cop's twice the joke's size.

Have you not noticed they do not do much patrolling in vehicles, so who would have stopped this guy. People are constantly trying to get Thais to do things Thais do not do.

I don't think so. The guy is clearly a deranged nutter. A crazed loon. Even I would not want to have got out of my vehicle with him about.

What I would have done, once my dash cam had recorded him attacking my vehicle with a meat cleaver, would be to simply run him over and hopefully break his legs. Then I would get out of my vehicle.....
