Exactly what is poverty??
Before I retired over here 4 years ago..people were claiming poverty..yet they had mobile phones..were in the pub and smoked!!
If someone only has freeview tv .. does not smoke..drink..gamble..do drugs..does not have a mobile phone..then I would say that he/she is in need of some financial aid.

I see your point. AND despise it.

What is required for a reasonable life? A roof over your head? Heat? Light? Power? Food? .....

Our RIDICULOUS housing system is one of the main culprits. Crap quality, crap style and cheap materials. Vastly expensive. Too many people generated wealth from house inflation

Look at our neigbours in Europe

When we say poverty we mean relative poverty.

A reasonable life for reasonable work. Social justice.

You know, like Northern Europe and NOT like the USA (or U.K.)

Food banks!!!!????

If you believe all the doom n gloom re brexit..then property prices will nosedive giving 1st time buyers a chance of getting a foot on the ladder.
Re council housing..that has been pretty much shambolic since I went to school and I'm 68 years young..lived all my days under mostly a Labour Party Glasgow City Council Administration.

The embarrassing gross inequality in the U.K. Is ONE of the reasons that there is so much unhappiness leading to Brexit.

Incidentally, council houses were built to a high standard post war and estates had plenty of open spaces. So different from the back to back terraces that JRM would recall. Selling off council houses at an undervalue robbed the state with the sole purposes of winning votes. Typical Tory move.

Grouse in two years you have had nothing but negative comments about the UK, I doubt you will ever change. I wish you well with your Danish Passport.

You misjudge me Vogie. I have lived well in the U.K.

There are are many things I love about the place but many things I despise. The latter are generally self inflicted.

Take the way Thatcher caused so much physical and societal damage

If you like, I will mention positive stuff:

Pubs. Best in the world

Ecclesiastical architecture

Cricket

universities

fish and chips

draught bitter

pomp

humour

the BBC

fly fishing

The national trust

grouse shooting!

dry stone walls

sea gulls

courtesy

Land Rovers

60s, 70s and 80s music

Winchester

Harrogate

Durham

Edinburgh

Shall I go on?

Poverty is though having to use foodbanks, live on ever lower benefits, and pay three quarters of your low salary on just rent and bills.

Shall I go on?

"Shall I go on?" I'd rather you didn't.

Quite an eclectic list, the only ones I have an issue are,

Universities, judging by some remainers on here with a Uni education I would like to think non of my hard earned taxes went into funding their education.

The BBC, now run by young liberals (I'll leave that hanging there)

When you say "pomp", do you mean a bicycle pomp?

Grouse shooting, definately, why even have a close season.

Fly fishing, only tried it once, but I did catch a 5lb bluebottle.

But all in all not a bad list.????

Rubbish there are so many opportunities no one needs to be in poverty. There’s hardly any unemployment plenty of work it is a utopia.

Grouse I am surprised at your assumptions.

I lived in a post war council house was good size with a garden with my Grandad for a bit.

When my grandad got it he had council inspections to check things like garden was maintained etc, he considered it a privallage not a right ‘ it was his home fit for heroes’ so loved the place.

Now people don’t all appreciate what they have, drive through most of these estates you will see how bad people treat what they have been effectively given. Interestingly most of the sold off houses look much better. The council stopped inspecting as couldn’t get bad tenants out in any case. As still had to house the kids.

BTW he bought his at a discount and it allowed when he passed away to so the money allowed us get our first houses as we couldn’t have otherwise got the deposits, so really the Tories shared wealth to poor people who could not otherwise afford their own house. So well done to Thatcher!

Did you buy yours or still rent it, or are you talking not from your own experience, but your perception of how it really was for those involved?

Indeed, people only respect what they earn.

Milk from the public tit is sweet, but more often than not it is crippling...

There must be poverty, I saw 2 old people begging in Hounslow when I was recently back in the UK.

I think they they were singing Romanian folk songs....
