New app helps traffic police nab fugitives on the road

A new mobile app has helped Bangkok traffic police arrest two fugitives over the past two weeks, a senior police officer said on Monday.

Pol Col Kitti Ariyanon said the Crimes on Mobile app helped traffic police quickly check drivers stopped for traffic violations against the online database of wanted criminals.

Kiti said traffic police from the Traffic Police Division of the Metropolitan Police Bureau have been trained to use the app and they managed to identify two fugitives during the first two weeks of using it.

In the first case, a taxi driver was arrested for violating traffic signs and not carrying a public driving license. The arresting traffic policeman checked the man with the app and found that the suspect was wanted for alleged credit card fraud.

In the second case, the suspect was stopped for a traffic offence and police found he was also wanted on charges of theft.

Kitti said traffic police from 88 police stations in Bangkok would be trained to use the app.

Knowing the obsession here with mobile phones, perhaps it has been developed so each police officer gains points per successful arrest. Or maybe Candy Crush points?

I was going to say that sadly it means the police will have a reason to stare at those screens even more, now it's in the line of duty, but they never to seem to have been reprehended over it in the past.

Jesus H... If only the gvt bought up the old police cars the western cops used to drive 30 years ago they could get their cops into cars, and also get their cops the much needed computers ours back home have been using for 30 years...

But, might need to upgrade OS to windows 98....

Then they could play Candy Crush without be disturbed by those annoying criminals and traffic accidents.

They wouldn't even have to take notice of something like the UK police ANPR (Automatic number plate recognition) system fitted into police cars, that from what I've seen in documentaries, automatically spots and recognises within seconds, stolen, uninsured, untaxed vehicles.

I'd be more than a little concerned that a system like that would allow them to identify red shirt or yellow shirt drivers (depending on who's in power that week) and make it easier to harass the opposition and prevent them from traveling freely within the country.

That kind of privacy intrusion is scary enough in a country with a well developed legal system.  Who knows what they'll be doing with the data when they find out how much Facebook makes selling our most intimate information?  They may look at their tax deficit and decide to supplement the coffers by selling your whereabouts to beer companies, insurance companies and anti-snooping consultants who can charge you big $$$ for tech that allows you to drive incognito.  A right we enjoyed for free just a few years back.

Problem here, most Highway police car are used to escort VIP and Traffic police pick-up are parked  at the local station. The Patrol car  concept like most modern cities is not in usage here yet. But they could fit those camera at traffic light near police box and police  can catch a few wanted on warrant on unpaid road taxes.

Seems like everyone they catch here have outstanding arrest warrants.theyve no respect for law and won't turn up for court.i think thailand needs to look at the future and build some super sized jails and fast.maybe if they know there's room for them and committing a crime that you do not pass go and go straight to jail might sink in.

hardly new. not even close. it appears the BIB are too lazy to enforce traffic rules even if they want cash.

I often see policeman using there phones in their little "houses". I initially though they were playing games and watching TV but, silly me, they're using an approved app!!!

More than a decade behind.  What’s next, a Thai invented computer in every squad car?

Now that's innovative (doesn't have to be Thai invented just a computer)

It needs to be a Thai innovation, or they cannot take credit.  It needs to be unique to Thailand
