What is the general rule for tipping?

You are either stupid, a liar, or you've never been to Thailand.  If you stay in a hotel they escort you to your room and stick out their paws for a tip after turning on the A/C.  This happens thousands of times per day.  Whats actually even worse is when I did this I would sometimes get a knock on the door later when I returned and its the hotel staff guy wanting his tip because he didn't get his piece of flesh when I first arrived.  Literally I went to the door, opened it, and there the guy is in his little hotel uniform with his hand out.  In this case he didn't even turn on the A/C just showed up and wanted money.  Yes this common and yes you're belief isn't required for reality to exist.

I disagree.  I gave a story about a tipping in a hotel and was immediately called a liar.  Not by you (fair play) but I was there and it did happen.  I live in China now and there is not a tipping culture here and its indeed welcome.  Your tab is your tab and nobody is spitting in your food or knocking on your door with their hand out.  Most refreshing.

No, you implied that the bell-staff in Thailand most always stick their hand out and waited for a tip, and accused anyone that disagreed with you of having either never been to Thailand, a fool or a liar.

Perhaps your were having a bad day when you wrote it, perhaps it was not what you meant, but that’s pretty much what you wrote.

I think you owe us an apology.

To be clear, if you’d have said it happened once or twice, I (and I assume most everyone) would have believed you.

I didn't imply the bell staff asked for tips - they usually do at the places I have stayed at.  That's my experience and I was called a liar for saying by someone else not you.  I then said that this person (not you) hadn't been Thailand.

It is not and you are incorrect.

No and i certainly don't owe you an apology since it wasn't you I was talking too.  Life isn't just about you snowflake.

I don't care what

I don't care to meet whatever standard of belief you choose to dream up in your head nor will I give any credence to such.

What he said was: “I’m a skinflint, and I want others to be skinflints as well so I can feel better about myself being a skinflint.

Not sure if he meant skinflint or chiseler, but the spirit is the same either way.

You're a dumbass.  Put the bottle down and take a breath you moron.

Generous to leave say a 100THB tip for a 200 THB massage.....but on the other hand if everybody starts to leave such 100 THB tips, in a short time the mamasan of the massage parlour will raise the basic price from 200 THB to 300 THB considering that people can afford it...and so on......

It is hard for westerners not to feel sorry....we all have empathy.....but for god's sake this is Thailand and please do your philanthrophy by Thai standards and don't cause an inflation of the prices with overwhelming generosity.

you set your own rules, for me i'm a practical man,

i tip massage if it was effective, cause i want that person to be more than happy to help me again.

if its someone that brought a cup of coffee, no reason to tip,

they cant really do it wrong, and if they somehow fail to give me the cup, then i wont be paying for the cup either

I tip for food delivery services (20baht normally, 40 baht when raining).

I normally tip for massages (50baht).

I only tip in restaurants when the server does something extra that is unexpected.

I tip when I’m allowed to park in convenient spot that the guard opens for me. (20-40baht).

I also tip for longer taxi rides. I just round up. Going to the airport for example is around 375baht so I give 400.

It’s not going to bankrupt me and I want to make people’s lives better.

Tip when Finnish in mau?

Some Idiot Americans believe its their holy mission in life to spread their stupid customs to the rest of the world whether other people want them or not.  While most aren't a pain or too pushy about this there are some arrogant <removed> who simply cannot imagine that other people prefer their own way of doing things and they will not shut up.  They look like inconsiderate ethnocentric morons to the rest of the planet but again lack of self reflection is like an olympic sport for some of them.

The US is a special case. Am very uncomfortable with the tipping culture in the US.

Anyway, I remember one occ., can't remember where but a late afternoon I had to wait several hours for a flight change

decided to have a meal

nice restaurant with nice view into the sunset

had the lot, some dry martinis - 3 courses - a bottle of red wine - brandy - the works

the bill came, efficient airport style computer bill, with fields for this and that

did some calc on the backside, subtracted tax, added a very generous tip added tax back on

then filled in the total field on the bill

the waitress went ballistic, totally pissed off that she would have to work out the tip herself

I was annoyed, said I will help you - give me  the bill;

look here; we strike out the total, we take this sum (wares+tax) and we put that as the new total,

all done - no calculations by you needed!

she was not happy

When I got back to the USA from Living in asia Once several years ago I went for a pint and tried to give my change as the tip at a bar. The barmaid threw the coins at me as I was walking away.

don't even think about leaving anything less then a dollar in the USA even if it's for a single beer. It also has to be a paper bill, any coinage is frowned upon.

i have come to realize how spoiled people are in the USA now. It's a mafia racket much like tuk tuks or taxis have become in some Asian tourist cities.

and of course it does not end there, the more people pay the higher the tip requests become. Soon it will be two dollars if it's not there already.

I am very uncomfortable with US and tipping, very uncomfortable, restaurants I manage, the rest - no,

I don't know in which situations tip is expected and I don't know how much

some years ago I had a meeting with a lawyer in DC, he maybe in late 30s or early 40s,

he claimed strongly that he never ever tip, restaurants, bars, taxis, hotels, what have you

yes, he was born and bred in US and white
