webfact
Smoking ban at public beaches in Thailand aims to protect visitors' health Source: Xinhua | Editor: yan FILE photo BANGKOK, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's ban on cigarette smoking at all public beaches is not only meant to reduce waste but also protect visitors' health, a senior government official said on Tuesday. Department of Marine and Coastal Resources Director General Jatuporn Burutphat confirmed that the smoking ban at the public beaches will certainly deter the littering of wasteful cigarette butts and keep beachgoers from inhaling cigarette smoke. Besides, the department chief said, cigarette butts contain nicotine and arsenic, among other chemicals, contaminate the water and adversely affect aquatic animals in the sea. 4MyEgo
I'm all for a smoke free world, starting at the beaches is great, but does he seriously think people will listen, like smokers at toilets, no smoking signs at petrol service station toilets, clearly visible and smoking away, can he extend it to the bush and stop all of these farmers back burning and using charcoal to cook with which is more harmful to the environment we live in, yeh I know, dream on...... Cough.... Zzzz....

ezzra
Funny to see how Thailand selectively and arbertiterarly decide who's health when and where the want to protect today, if you want to really protect the health of visitors why not the locals? why not only on the beaches? why cigarettes only while million other health hazard are everywhere and are causing irreversible harm to one an and all... bearpolar
I will definitely get an officer every time someone smokes. They stopped people from smoking and drinking on the public beach in my city back in Canada and it's the only fking beach in the whole world ive been to(that wasnt empty in a remote area) that was completely clean with no loud jersey shore type trashy people. Keeping smokers away from any place ups the quality by 70% at least. Yes, smokers are trashy weak minded people, also they litter and smell bad. mommysboy
Taken on its own, nobody can argue with a public smoking ban. Lined up against myriad other causes of pollution, some of them planet threatening, it's an absolute farce. Of course, vaping harms no one, but I suppose that's just too easy and sensible, and easily allowed. No good at all for a bunch of do gooders intent on ruining simple pleasures. There's something about this type of puritanism that makes me want to go out and buy a couple of packs, even though I have given up. Excellent, brilliant place to start, freeing the public from cigarette smoke in an outdoor environment. Wouldn't want the pollutants from vehicle exhausts to get in the way of BS reports like this would we? Self contained oxygen breathing systems for pedestrians would be fully endorsed by me if they were in anyway serious about these claims.

Darcula
Worried about visitors health? Maybe, first enforce the existing bans on murders, rapes, reckless driving and beer-bottle assaults.

meechai
If you want to protect visitors health... 1- Teach silver Van & Bus drivers how to drive without yaba...Get the #1 most dangerous/most deaths roads in the world title removed 2- Inspect trucks & vehicles for emissions. Talk about smoke? Black Smoke billowing from most SeeLor Dangs 3- Stop Burning crops...not just talk about laws...Stop Burning...Burn & lose your land When these things are done then worry about the tiny amount of smoke coming from cigarettes (No I do not smoke)

It's part of a scientific test to find out how much crap the public can absorb without repercussions. The results are passed onto the PMs speech-writers.
