The officer, identified as Police Sergeant Ittipon Chaikhod from the 22nd Border Patrol Police Division, was off-duty during the occurrence, which marked a severe breach of disciplinary conduct. The incident unfolded around 2.30pm on Tuesday, June 17, when Thong Lo police received alerts about a man driving erratically and threatening others with a firearm near Maleenont Tower in the Khlong Toei district. Quick police response enabled them to intercept the suspect's vehicle, a white Mitsubishi with a Sisaket licence plate. Upon inspection, they discovered an M4A1 rifle and 29 rounds of ammunition concealed near the rear passenger seat. Sergeant Chaikhod admitted to carrying the government-issued weapon and claimed he was on his way to pick up his wife. Although he confessed to brandishing the rifle during a confrontation with a taxi driver, he maintained that he did not discharge it. Further investigations at Thong Lo Police Station, including a drug test at Khlong Tan Hospital, revealed methamphetamine in his system, which he also admitted to using earlier. Following these revelations, Police General Kittirat Phanpet, the national police chief, instructed Police Major General Kittisak Plathong to issue an order for Sergeant Chaikhod’s temporary dismissal. The officer faces charges for serious disciplinary violations, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, public weapon carriage without permission, and driving under the influence of methamphetamine. This incident highlights concerns over police conduct and the measures needed to ensure accountability within the force.
