Vintage Volkswagens

I used to rebuild 70’s British sports cars as a hobby in the UK, before moving to Thailand. Love the classics and would like to see some of his work, just from an enthusiasts perspective. No room to keep another car unfortunately.☹️

As another poster mentioned, regular buses can be made into the much rarer 23 window models. I know of someone who does it. To me they look identical, maybe a VW guy would spot something. He even converts regular beetles back to the smaller (older/rarer/more expensive) oval window models.

I wonder how so many rare vans ended up in Thailand. All the VW cocktail bars had me wondering how they were brought into the country. Well, they are right hand drive. Beautiful and so cooool.

If these vans were in Cali they would bring in piles of moola even with right hand drive.

I noticed the bugs have added stuff under the dashboards. What are those things? Are they actually original?

Don'y know where he lives but I have pictures of most of the above because he had them on display in Maya (?) Mall last July?

As for Chiang Mai I have run across Karmen Ghia models in Chiang Mai, that I never knew existed, or were never sold in the US back when.

That very well might be the type 3 Ghia which was never sold in North America.

Came out at same time as the Variant station wagon.

Is the pricing astronomical? Thanks

You need to look at his Facebook page and decide for yourself. But some of the prices are way off what you would pay in the U.K.

It's beautiful restoration work for sure and maybe rich Thais will lap it up, due to the fact that there are varying and very expensive import rules and taxes.

I don't think many from the U.K. would be in the market for these at the prices advertised.

My apologies, these are not technically vintage, but they are beautiful machines. I believe that this is a father and son team who purchase the vehciles, then strip them down to bare metal and full respray, rebuild etc etc.

Some more examples of their fine work.

I used to have an oval window Beetle in the mid 1960s back in the UK. LHD, 6 volt battery under the back seat that sparked on the seat springs going over bumps on the road, semaphore indicators, separate starter button, the fuel gauge was a tyre lever dipped into the fuel tank. It was about a 1951 model imported from Germany by another RAF guy. It came with an ammo box full of tools and a workshop manual.

I paid about 5 quid for it as it wasn't running properly. Me and my mate took the engine out and the cylinder head on one side was loose. We tightened it up and it ran OK so we stripped it down and overhauled it. I had it about 15 months and I gave it to my mate when I was posted to Singapore in 1968.

For those of you living in Bangkok or close by, interested in old, sometime rare cars and other vehicules, I can only but recommend a visit to the Jesada Technik Museum in Nakhon Chai Si ( Nakhon Pathom).  It is a private museum, entry is free, quite an extensive collection with more than 250 cars, plus buses, plus aircraft, plus bikes and other rare motorcycles.

another place is Talad Rot Fai on Srinakarin behind Seacon Square, for mostly American muscle cars:

Beautiful restorations of lethal vehicles. The spear to the front ( AKA steering column ) and a front petrol tank always made me feel uncomfortable. The floor heater vents were great in a Melbourne winter; however, not so great when they leaked heat in summer.

Aircon in Thailand would be essential. A fair strain on a motor already relying on air cooling.

Rumor has it many VW panels early on were mixtures of salvaged steels. That would add to the degree of difficulty in restoration.

that is correct without an additional condenser panel with an electric fan. father and son are doing an excellent job and might have thought of this. but space in the engine compartment of a "bug" comes at a premium.

Your profile pic reminds me of an old UK saying, along the lines of .......

Of the original 3306 Mk1 Lotus Cortinas that were built, only 5200 remain.

but one of the original 2894 or 3306 would be worth more than one of the fakes, only about 150 are taxed each year in the uk

Recently saw some pretty examples for sale at hysterical prices in Kad Suan Keow. Looked like the most expensive one had a 400k premium because it sported a leaky canvas roof. My family suffered one of these asthmatic tin cans in the 80s - why anyone would pay more than 200k for one in this day and age truly baffles me.
