Police armed with a search warrant from the Bangkok South court raided two shops in the Sua Pa market yesterday.

They found 100,000 items many of which were phone cases ripping off the One Piece cartoon brand. There were also Louis Vuitton bags.

On the seventh floor they found the phone cases hidden in the ceiling in a storage area. A Chinese owner called Lin was arrested along with thirteen of his staff.

In another shop Chaeng Yuyu was apprehended.

The items were illegally imported and had not had tax paid on them. They were worth 5 million baht.

The losses would have been 20 million baht based on the sales price of the real merchandise.

The raid was conducted after a complaint from New Star Media who have the One Piece distribution rights and that of other brands like Ultraman.

a case to answer yes... but what about all the fake phones?

They where on the seventh floor, considering the size of the officers, it'll take awhile before they have reposessed them...

well, it would be interesting to for the police to track which check point / airport the goods came in. And who handled the clearance, and why no tax was collected! hahaha

Please behave yourself.  That would be the easy and simple way to do the investigation.  Don't you know, it works like this - they all sit around and the person in charge gives out one to each, and one in a separate pile, in rotation until all have been evenly distributed.  Everybody knows how many each has, then they get sold to somebody, somewhere and they all get their share of the funds and the articles are back in/on the market for sale, except the small pile that was set aside as "evidence" for when (should maybe read IF) the case gets to court, if ever.

Just think, how many such phone cases can be smuggled in by a Chinese tour group of 34, if everyone of the travellers is asked by the tour guide to put just 30 into their luggage: 34 x 30 = 1,020!

too bad nobody has the cojones to directly question China on their role in the importation of this crap.

There is a lot of smuggling of smartphones (and other goods) going on between Hong Kong and mainland China. Wonder, how many phones and pirated goods are smuggled into Thailand by some of the Chinese tourists...

"A man has been arrested at the Chinese border for attempting to enter China with 94 iPhones strapped to his body, according to a Sina news report. A citizen of Hong Kong, the man had strapped rings of iPhones around his thighs, torso, calves, and crotch, using a combination of plastic bags and masking tape (...) The phones have been seized and are currently being held by customs officials."

But folks will yell and scream about Prez Trump punishing the Chinese.

I can remember NYC being flooded with fakes during the Mao years for gods sake. This is how they do business.
