TORONTO (Reuters) - Filmmaker Michael Moore compares U.S. President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler in his provocative new documentary, "Fahrenheit 11/9" that got its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday to a sold-out audience.

The documentary examines the forces Moore believes contributed to Trump's election victory in November 2016, drawing parallels with the rise of Hitler in 1930s Germany.

The White House could not immediately be reached for comment on Thursday.

At one point, the film superimposes Trump's words over videos of Hitler's rallies, as a historian talks about the rise of strong men to positions of power.

"We explore the question of how the hell we got in this mess and how do we get out of it," the liberal activist told reporters ahead of the film's screening.

"He's (Trump) been around for a long time and we've behaved in a certain way for a long time and when you look back now you can see how the road was paved for him," Moore said.

The new film was a call to action for Americans, said Moore, who won an Oscar in 2003 for his gun violence documentary "Bowling for Columbine."

"We are in a war to get our country back," he said. "Anyone who doesn't understand that is going to be sorely disappointed in the results of what's about to happen in the next few years with Donald Trump."

"Fahrenheit 11/9" takes its title from the early hours of Nov. 9, 2016, when Republican candidate Trump was officially declared the victor over Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton.

In the film, Moore assigns blame for Trump's victory to widespread assumptions that Clinton would win, vested interests, and U.S. media that prioritized the big audiences Trump drew to television programming.

The documentary premiered the same week the New York Times printed an anonymous opinion column whose writer described "a quiet resistance" to Trump within his own administration, and advance excerpts of a new book by journalist Bob Woodward portrayed Trump as prone to impulsive decision-making.

It follows Moore's one-man show on Broadway last year in which he used his satirical blend of humor to target Trump and encourage liberals to turn resentment at the Republican political agenda into resistance.

The film also touched on topics ranging from mass shootings in American schools to the contamination of water in Moore's Flint, Michigan hometown.

At the end of the Toronto premiere, Moore emerged on stage, accompanied by some of the Florida school students who led nationwide protests demanding stricter gun laws.

"Fahrenheit 11/9" will open in movie theaters across the U.S. on Sept. 21.

Not really funny.

TIFF is a very major film festival. Great place to premiere a major film.

That is something Trump would say, Mr. President.

The US has just turned into a vast reality TV program, in which entertainment value is everything, and the truth is expendable, and just whatever you feel like saying on the day. If Hitler was still alive he would be grossly offended by any comparison with Trump.

I for one am not too bothered about the sensitivities of long dead Adolph.

I believe Mr Moore is over the top  on his Hitler/Trump comparison but I would say that Trump and his cronies do use the theory of -if you tell lies long enough- people will believe it.  This was used very successfully by the Nazis.

Michael Moore actually predicted Trump would win the Presidency.  The Democrats/Progressives really need to be honest with themselves and study why Trump was able to win. .  His tax cuts are popular and his business tax cut has spured the economy and created jobs. There are plenty of other actions that are horrid and destroying confidence in the US.  If the traiff situation starts to impact prices and jobs significantly his supporters will start to turn away from him.

However, Trump is his own worst enemy and his use of Twitter is destroying his Presidency because everyone can see how he operates and how he makes decisions.  His narcissistic personality will be his end because e refuses to believe his advisers caution on saying and doing certain things. Then there is the Mueller investigation which is getting closer and closer to Trump and his immediate family.

The Dems will take over the House- 1 Jan 2019 and the end becomes near.    Trump will have two choices- resign with some dignity and be pardoned by Pence or be impeached and convicted  as he goes down fight to the end and be tarred and feathered on his way down Pennsylvania Avenue as the white House door hits him the ass.

So are these "TSD's" (this acronym is a new one on me) a Temperature-Determined Sex, Totally Disolved Solids, TeDiuS. . . or a combination of all three?

(With thanks to the FT list of these and no less than 94 other definitions).

Pathetic.

The demonization of racial and religious minorities, the scapegoating, the attacks on the press, the propaganda, the lying and dishonesty, the authoritarianism, the racial identity politics, the populism, the criminality, the use of government for personal advantage, the brokering in conspiracy theories, the loyalty pledges, the emphasis on nationalist regalia (flag, parades, pledges of allegiance), the buildup of the military, the alliances with other authoritarian governments, the undermining of institutions (the judiciary, NATO, trade agreements, the Fed, the FBI, intelligence community), the encouragement of hooliganism and violence to support one's views, and the tolerance of right wing political extremism are all characteristics which the Trump administration shares with the National Socialist party of 1930's Germany.

People balk at comparing Donald Trump to Adolph Hitler because of the Holocaust, but forget that the National Socialist's campaign to repress civil liberties and political disent began gradually long before the Holocaust reached its pinnacle. The drawing of historical parallels between these two leaders is well justified, and many noted historians have drawn similar conclusions.

The TDS acronym is a marketing slogan used to deflect criticism of Donald Trump, namely “Trump Derangement Syndrome”. Meaning that if you criticise Trump you must have something wrong with you. A bit like the “project fear” slogan used to put down people who thought Brexit was a bad idea. It’s a tactic that allows you to avoid dealing with the criticism.

I don’t think that Trump is like Hitler but I do agree that he is using tactics straight out of the Nazi party playbook. If you keep on telling a lie eventually people will believe it. Using the justice department to attack enemies, selecting a group or groups of people as scapegoats , describing the free press as enemies of the people, attempting to override the constitution and dismantle the apparatus of state designed to prevent despots and tyrants taking over the country.

Hitler had a vision to takeover Europe but Trump really only wants to use the office to get as rich as he claims to be, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or what the implications are for the country. He has been laundering Russian money for several decades and is totally corrupted and compromised. That’s why he’ll never criticise Putin and act s like a lap dog in his presence. It’s alleged in the dossier that he was to secretly get 19% of Rosneft for dismantling the Magnitsky Act and giving Putin the nod on Ukraine’s Crimea and Montenegro in return. It was reported recently that 19.5% of Rosneft was sold with the funds channeled through companies based in tax havens with unknown shareholders. Would Trump do that? I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.

Yes- I have said several times- the dossier is real and it is essentially correct.

At one time Trump was essentially broke- he couldn't get loans from American banks because he was bankrupt-several times.  However, the Russians came to his aid by laundering money through the Trump Business enterprise.  They would purchase a $10 Million Condo for $20  with extra $10 million going to Trump.   It is interesting to note that Trump-has never released his tax return because he probably has a portion which shows Russian money going through his business. On the surface it would look legal to the Revenue Department (IRS) but in reality it is money laundering.

The above business arrangement started in the 80s and has carried on until Trump ran for President. The Russians had no idea Trump would become President but they also managed to get Trump in compromising positions while he was in Moscow.  The salacious portion of the dossier in which hookers are pissing on a bed that Obama slept in and paid by Trump is of any real value by itself but there is no doubt in  my mind the Russians have plenty of pictures that are much more salacious than that.

Then the Russians really got lucky-Trump ran for President and was nominated.  Putin being the excellent KGB operative that he is- would never let this opportunity pass- the Russians hacked away- planted fake stories in the news and were partially responsible for a Trump victory.  Trump's downtrodden American supporters did the rest by casting their votes correctly to set up the Electoral College victory.  ( Clinton actually won the popular vote)

Is there proof?  Several pieces of the puzzle are being put together right now with the biggest piece the tax returns- tracing the money and collaborating the dossier.  I  believe Trump is vulnerable  because someone always talks once the pressure becomes so great that all the base for escape are covered. In addition, during the Watergate scandal of the70s-  'Deep Throat' always said- follow the money.  And guess what- Trump now has a 'deep throat' who is putting out information.  My conjecture is that the new Deep Throat will put out more info and is actually somewhat either in the FBI or the Department of Justice.

Mueller will eventually get Trump's son; his brother in law and possibly Ivanka. At some point Mueller will go to Trump and show his hand.  Trump will be cornered with no way out and either resign to save his family and self with pardons all around by Pence or in the worst case scenario Trump will fight like crazy taking the Nation with him.  This is where the Congress will step in - impeach and convict.  The Dems will have gained the House and by the time the evidence starts to emerge Trump will be cornered and  be sent packing.

JUst like during Watergate- the Repubs in the House and senate will cave because they will be presented with so much strong evidence that if they do not convict Trump and send him onto the dustbin of History- the reaper will come for them.

Let's hope Donald Trump does what he always does-  settle when cornered but in this case Resign and go back to evicting elderly ladies from their homes to get their property.

I know it is difficult for some, but put aside  personal political views and whether one agrees/disagrees/approves/disapproves with President Trump.

Moore is wrong. The remaining survivors of the Holocaust and historians can explain why. However, one of the motives of the  Holocaust education effort was to prevent additional genocides from occurring. Genocides as occurred in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur. Nothing Trump has done comes close to these events. There have been no mass killings or new whole scale stripping of basic human rights. To toss an accusation like this is to diminish the Holocaust and its victims.

It's wonderful that so many people have discovered their inner civil rights beacon. Where were they during the state sponsored gerrymandering that has occurred over the past 50 years? Where were they when  Afro Americans were being incarcerated in large numbers  over the past 100 years? Where were they when  marginalized Americans were being killed  by police under questionable circumstances in "liberal" jurisdictions? Where were they when successive administrations both Democrat and Republican interfered in the democratic processes, affairs and elections of other countries etc.

I don't agree with Trump and loathe many of his policies, and do consider some of his facial and physical  gestures to mirror Mussolini's, but a mass murderer or promoter of genocide? No. Never.

I don't disagree with what you say about Genocides, and I'm sure the Armenians wouldn't either. However as I understand it, and I can only go by what I have read, Moore is analysing the build up of fascism in Germany the 30s, and how they circumvented democratic safeguards to control the country, and comparing it to similar developments in Trump's USA. I was not aware that Moore had made any suggestions of Trump being a mass murderer, genocidal or otherwise. Given this is correct, and the full genocidal mania is a stage Trump clearly has not reached, comparison to the Holocaust is not relevant, it is simply not the point that Moore is trying to make.

Thanks for putting me in the picture about TDS. One can't help wondering why the acronym has failed to gain sufficient traction for it to pop up via a Google search.

One possible explanation could be that Trump is actually far more popular at home and abroad than one might gather from a mainly hostile mass media or sour Democrats of the kind who create TDS and other derogatory memes to rubbish his support base.

To compare Trump to Hitler is a big stretch (I grew up during the war, so I should know), as is the accusation that this multi-billionaire businessmen aspired to the Presidency purely for pecuniary gain.

All he wanted to do, he explained, was make America great again. So give the poor sucker an even break and let him try.

If you honestly believe that Donald Trump cares about the "poor sucker" and wants to extend him a break you really haven't done much research into his back ground and character. The "poor sucker" is the useful idiot he needed to get elected. And TDS was created by Trump supporting Fox News to denigrate his critics ... as I said, a bit of research doesn't go amiss.

these ideas that compare Trump to Hitler are just racist. Why?

One person comitted genocide agains milions of Jewish people and also was the cause of tens of millions of other people's lives lost in the war. And the other person didn't kill anyone.

When you say really dumb krap like Trump = Hitler, you're basically saying the genocide didn't happen or that Jewish lives lost were meaningless......Moore should really walk the talk and move to that socialist paradise of Venezuela that he loves so much or just go back into the hole and shut up
